The press has been obsessed with the abusers’ race

High-profile grooming case exposes the bleak reality of some young women’s lives, says Judith Orr

Nine men from Rochdale in the north west of England were jailed last week after being found guilty of sexually exploiting young girls.

Media headlines concentrated on the fact that most of the men were Pakistani and their victims white.

BNP Nazi Nick Griffin tried to capitalise on outrage at the crimes.

And the racist English Defence League announced it will march in Rochdale next month.

But the moral panic about race hides the real scandal—the reality of the lives of the women in the case and how the system failed them.

One 15 year old girl first reported the abuse in 2008, when she was arrested for causing a nuisance outside a kebab shop.

She told police she was having sex with older men in return for vodka, phone cards and food.

She even handed over underwear with DNA traces from a 59 year old man who was one of those convicted last week.

But lawyers decided that no jury would believe her. This is not unusual.

The Crown Prosecution Service calculates that of 17,000 reported sexual offences involving children under 16 last year, just under a quarter went to trial.

Worthless

Sexual exploitation often involves young women who have suffered abuse. All the women in the Rochdale case were in or around the care system.

Bea Kay is a GMB union steward in children’s social care in Sheffield, training those who work with young people on issues of grooming and sexual exploitation.

She told Socialist Worker, “The support for young people today is pitiful. Vulnerable young people often feel worthless.

“An older man or group of men who pay attention to them and give them ‘gifts’, however trivial, can make them feel valued.”

Sex has become a valuable currency in our society—and for some women it may be their only currency.

This means that young, vulnerable people can be drawn into exploitative relationships.

And the already fragile safety net for those damaged by neglect and abuse is now threatened by cuts.

Rochdale Unison union rep Sam O’Brien spoke to Socialist Worker in a personal capacity. He said, “We face cuts of £125 million. This will affect the most vulnerable in an already deprived town.”

So-called “street grooming” is not a specific criminal offence. But the term is almost always used to refer to crimes committed by Asian men.

This is similar to the way that the term “mugging” was coined in the 1970s to target black people as criminals.

The media’s focus on race and “street grooming” could divert attention from other forms of abuse.

Tony Staunton has decades of experience of working with children and families.

He said, “Sexual abuse and grooming is not a new problem and it will not be solved by seeing it as an issue in one culture or racial group.

“The majority of child abuse takes place within families and goes undetected. Young people are being failed by society.”

Myth Busting
The media has whipped up a panic about gangs of Asian men in the wake of the Rochdale case.

Police figures show that 95 percent of those on the Greater Manchester Sex Offenders register are white
West Yorkshire police figures show that out of 53 arrests for grooming offences in the last three years, 47 were white
A University College London study found that most child sex offenders act alone

6 Ways That Food Is Being Used As A Weapon Against Us
By Activist Post

Hungry people will do anything for food, which means that those who have control over food can use it as leverage. In 1974, Henry Kissinger suggested using food as a weapon to induce targeted population reduction in a previously classified 200-page report, National Security Study Memorandum 200: Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for U.S. Security and Overseas Interests. The primary tactic to be applied is that food aid would be withheld from developing nations until they submitted to birth control policies:

There is also some established precedent for taking account of family planning performance in appraisal of assistance requirements by AID [U.S. Agency for International Development] and consultative groups. Since population growth is a major determinant of increases in food demand, allocation of scarce PL 480 resources should take account of what steps a country is taking in population control as well as food production. In these sensitive relations, however, it is important in style as well as substance to avoid the appearance of coercion.

So, food was to be used as just another method of imperial colonization to force countries to conform their policies to those desired by the controllers. Notably, this tactic only works as a blunt weapon on territories enduring a severe economic collapse and with little resources for food production. Today, however, it appears that the entire globe is receiving an arsenal of food bombs as there appears to be a multifaceted attack on people’s access to food. In other words, what has been an admitted tactic for nearly 40 years of controlling food aid for regional population reduction has now grown more complex and expansive.

Because of massive corporate consolidation of agriculture, centrally coordinated global regulations, a devalued commodity-dollar and unrestrained commodity speculation, chemical and genetic modification, and real or manipulated food shortages; there is indeed a war being waged — with food as the primary weapon. Understand, this is a not purely a war on food, but rather a war on the general population. Therefore, it is crucial to understand these tactics in order to defend against them.

Here are six ways food is being used to wage war against the population:

1. Food inflation:
Crippling food inflation is now affecting every corner of the world with the poorest feeling the worst pangs. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) food price index increased by 3 points to 234 points in June – a 39% increase on the year. These increases are causing mass starvation and rioting in many poor regions of the world, but they are also beginning to punish the middle-class in the Industrialized nations. The price of food is inflating primarily because of a devalued commodity-dollar from excessive money printing and Wall Street commodity speculation. Perhaps it’s more appropriate to call it commodity manipulation, not speculation. As William Engdahl recently pointed out: “The ability to manipulate the price of essential foods worldwide at will — almost irrespective of today’s physical supply and demand for grains — is quite recent….Up until the grain crisis of the mid-1970s there was no single ‘world price’ for grain, the benchmark for the price of all foods and food products.”

What fuels commodity speculation is not just the obvious decline of the dollar and a flight to something tangible, but also genuine supply concerns based on a variety of factors that cause crop shortages like extreme weather or disease. Regardless of real or manipulated food shortages, food prices will continue to rise because of increased demand and an incrementally weaker dollar. Luckily, there are many ways to protect yourself from food inflation and the food war in general.

2. Shortages:
Through supply controls, food shortages have been used as a weapon to create regional conflicts, to encourage peacekeeping missions, and as a foreign policy carrot — as clearly outlined in Kissinger’s 1974, Memorandum 200. The most recent examples can be found with the current and ongoing negotiations with North Korea who perpetually holds a nuclear gun to the West’s head in exchange for food. Somalia, who was food self-sufficient until the 1970s, has become a “failed state” because of food shortages. Significantly, the situation in Somalia and other large-scale famine are usually caused by a manipulated economic collapse. In fact, many have reported that the lack of food was an underlying factor of the Egyptian revolution.

Because of corporate consolidation of staple crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat — and the central control of food aid — it is now easy to manipulate food shortages. But, clearly, there are also catastrophic weather events that destroy production in entire regions such as the heat wave in Russia last summer that caused them to restrict wheat exports in what some referred to as food wars. Many countries that had contracts with Russia were not happy, and their protectionist move had global effects on the food prices. In other words, imminent food shortages are typically a localized problem, but because the food system is so interconnected, local problems now affect the global community.

3. Chemical Additives:
Chemical additives, from pesticides to preservatives, can only be viewed as a weapon in the depopulation agenda. Clearly, laboratory-concocted chemicals were never meant for human consumption. Therefore, they can only be attributed to an effort to deliberately and slowly poison the population. Many food and drink toxins like fluoride, aspartame, or monosodium glutamate (MSG) are now well-known to have negative health effects. Other lab creations like high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are also beginning to prove very unhealthy with tests showing mercury in corn syrup. Incidentally, we dare you to find any sweet food that doesn’t contain either aspartame or HFCS. Even wholesome Campbell’s Tomato soup has HFCS, as does Heinz ketchup — while nearly every candy or gum contains aspartame. It’s estimated that the average American consumes 12 teaspoons of HFCS per day, while the younger population consumes nearly double that. “Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered,” said Dr. David Wallinga of the Agriculture and Trade Policy whose study found about a third of brand-name foods with HFCS had measurable amounts of mercury.

Pesticides fall into the chemical additive category — GM pesticides especially (called Bt toxins). They are found in the blood stream of nearly all North Americans, and even in 80% of their unborn babies. It is presumed these toxins are acquired by eating genetically modified corn or soy, and from the livestock that feed on it. A recent study proved that the chemical found in best-selling pesticides, glyphosate, causes birth defects among other ailments. We must understand that although all of these toxins, and a host of others, are approved for consumption by the FDA, it doesn’t make them safe. And even the ones that have exotic names but have yet to be proven to have ill effects surely have a cumulative impact on human health. They’re so pervasive that it seems impossible to evade them, but there are still ways to eat like a human.

4. Regulations:
By restricting food freedom, regulatory agencies purposely increase dependence on the Big Ag monopoly cartel that fully controls the basic building blocks of food. Simply put, those who control the corn, wheat, soybeans and rice, control all food, since all livestock and all processed foods are dependent on those food sources. In America, and increasingly around the world, this cartel places their cronies in government regulatory agencies like the USDA to weed out their competition through excessive regulation. Furthermore, this restriction of food freedom is happening in concert across the globe, precisely because it is a top-down globalist initiative driven by international regulatory agencies such as the World Trade Organization and the United Nations. It is a complex, interwoven agenda that takes into account everything from health safety to land use rights in order to force independent food producers to conform in ways that only benefit a global corporate structure. Regulatory agencies are one of the primary weapons deployed against independent living.

5. Genetic Modification:
There are many reasons to avoid eating genetically modified food, from health concerns to supporting a fundamentally evil food cartel. Genetically modified foods are the path to monopolies over human life through patented technology and environmental destruction by chemical-heavy monoculture practices. GMOs are so pervasive in the United States that it is estimated that 70% of the average American diet contains them. Many European countries, and other regions, have rejected GMOs. Hungary recently destroyed illegal GM corn crops and plans to make distributing seeds a felony offense. However, because of corporate/political pressure, most resistant countries are being forced to adopt them. All of this despite the fact that environmental infection and contamination are proven effects of transgenic plants. Meanwhile, the control is being implemented under convoluted patent laws, where the mutation itself signifies originality and control over the natural organism it imitates.

6. The Weather:
Weather undeniably affects food access and food costs. One glance at maps across the globe reveals that food production areas are being especially hard hit, and we are seeing prices rise accordingly. These natural events can be exploited both by speculators and governments. However, with the introduction of weather modification, invested in by those such as Bill Gates and openly promoted by elite globalist think tanks, concerns have been raised over the possibility that governments could use weather as a deliberate weapon to create food wars. Accusations have already been leveled charging exactly that. While some might dismiss the various possibilities of “steering the weather” for malevolent purposes as conspiracy, it is much more difficult to ignore the 1996 document presented to the Air Force titled Owning the Weather 2025 (PDF), which explicitly states as a heading on page 10: Applying Weather-modification to Military Operations. One key section states that weather control could be virtual, as well as literal:

Offensive abilities could provide spoofing options to create virtual weather in the enemy’s sensory and information systems, making it more likely for them to make decisions producing results of our choosing rather than theirs. It would also allow for the capability to mask or disguise our weather-modification activities.

[...]

Also key to the feasibility of such a system is the ability to model the extremely complex nonlinear system of global weather in ways that can accurately predict the outcome of changes in the influencing variables.

[...]

Conceivably, with enough lead time and the right conditions, you could get “made-to-order” weather.

This would certainly be the ultimate endgame for anyone wishing to use food as a weapon of control and profit. This possibility should not be easily dismissed, but rather it warrants open-minded investigation and research.

As we can see, food control is full spectrum, with wars being declared on the individual, states, and sovereign nations simultaneously. Food controllers utilize health, politics, and economics to integrate their agenda. Only full spectrum solutions can be employed as protection. There is much hope to be offered through alternative markets, barter systems, and local co-ops. We welcome your thoughts in the comments section below about other creative ideas we can implement to preserve our independence.

“True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.” — Franklin Roosevelt

What’s with the South Asian inferiority complex?
May 5, 2012

I believe that the denial of one’s background maybe associated with the stereotypes that are applied to the South Asian community.
As a Pakistani who has lived most of his life in Canada, I have had many experiences in which I have observed the often bizarre and complex ways of the South Asian (Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh) community. One of the most prominent of these is their ability to deny any connection with their background.

Now, keeping in mind that this does not apply to all the people in the group mentioned earlier, it certainly does cover several of them.

Once, when I had just entered my teenage years, I had a Pakistani girl tell me that all the people who lived in Canada but were not born there (immigrants) were “FOBs” – an FOB being an acronym for the derogatory term “fresh off the boat”, implying that the person is a refugee.

But in her ignorance she forgot that she too was not born in Canada, but in Kuwait. After I pointed it out to her that if her theory was to be followed, she and her whole family would be labelled FOBs, she retracted her statement.

This incident gave me an insight into the mind of individuals who suffer from this inferiority complex. It showed that these people believed that they would raise their social profile by degrading their backgrounds.

Another time, when I entered high school, a girl sitting beside me told me that she was British; this seemed odd considering the fact that her name was Kiranjeet. Apparently she was born in England before her parents were deported to India before coming to Canada as refugees. In my opinion, I would consider her an Indian-Canadian at best since she had no roots in England or any other part of the UK.

The part that I fail to understand is that how can someone, in this case, be British when they have no connection to the UK other than their place of birth. In my view, England is only her birth place; it’s not her culture, it’s not her race and it’s not even her place of residence.

I have never experienced racism in Canada, at least not in the Greater Toronto Area where I reside. However, it is surprising to see that some people in our community feel that they are superior to others just because they (or their parents) moved to Canada before them. Let us not forget that the only people who can legitimately claim to be natives of this land are the Aboriginals.

Furthermore, a large group of South Asian-Canadian individuals feel that having the ability to speak English instantly makes them an intellectual. In the end, English is just a language. It may be the lingua franca, but it is still just a language. It has nothing to do with the amount of education a person has.

Take a look at Hu Jintao, the President of China and one of the most influential and powerful people in the world; he holds all his press conferences in his native language.

To suggest that our people are plainly just embarrassed of their heritage would be wrong. I believe that this denial of one’s background may be associated with the stereotypes that are applied to the South Asian community. Some common examples include generalising “brown” people as hairy, saying they smell like curry, or calling them terrorists.

I feel that these should be taken lightly, especially if you live in a large metropolitan where minorities form the majority. Most of the people only use these terms as jokes, and just because someone says something it doesn’t make it true anyway.

In addition to this, the countries that are associated with us are the third world countries; with corrupt governments and a significant amount of the population living below the poverty line, these nations are usually portrayed negatively in the media.

Another important thing is the English-speaking accent associated with our people. To put it lightly, it is not the most desired or attractive accent in the world.

I feel that people in the South Asian community should embrace their backgrounds instead of running away from it. I do understand people lying about it because of the existence of stereotypes, however by doing so, they only make the situation worse. They need to realise that this attitude does not help in getting rid of the stereotypes.

We have many things to be proud of. Even if our countries are currently suffering and being portrayed negatively, we must not forget our roots. We need to focus more on the positives, such as our culture, religion, family values, and the historical heritage of our country.

Being a Pakistani, I realise that life in Pakistan may be difficult at this moment. However, our country is still producing world class students who provide a reason to hope and hold our head up high with pride.

PS: For all the Pakistanis living in Canada, when you visit Pakistan next time please name your Facebook photo album something along the lines of “Pakistan 2012″ or “My trip to Pakistan” instead of “Paki-land”. I find it offensive.

I think Zeena is being unrealistic. Everyone has their own concept of religion , I m not a big fan of the opulence you see in Mecca but i also dont see the big deal. Obviously i would rather spend 20 million on other things if it was all my money but its not.

People actually live in Mecca all year round, its a real life big busting city not a small historic relic like Stonehenge. They have buisnesses and they have weddings and dinners parties etc etc. So why should the people of Mecca live like hermits with NO 5 or 7 star restaurants just because there is poverty in the world and tourists want them to take a symbolic stand against it.

And also if muslims can collectively spend millions of dollars of money on buying nice shoes make up, expensive vacations, cars, surfing the internet why would the Kaba cover be the one thing we HAVE to collectively save money on to feed the poor?

Im actually quite into the Kaaba its visually stunning, if there was a Kaaba beautification tax i'd happily pay it

And I cant believe some idiot who is supposedly "muslim" thinks we pray to the Kaaba

Cliftonbridge
You are missing the whole point. I am not being unrealistic, I am being more realistic based on the last sermon of Prophet(PBUH), the main essence of Islam and Quran which clearly teaches us to be modest and simple living. Hajj is not just a ritual, there is a great teaching behind all these rituals. Last sermon of Prophet(PBUH) during Hajj is based on the equality of all humans irrespective of color, race, gender and status. The main reason we do Hajj is to show this equality in each and every way possible and then practice this equality later in our daily lives.

Now, lets put this in perspective during Hajj, there are millions of poor Muslims sleeping on streets and in open air in the lawns of Masjid- ul-haram(Kabbah) and Madina(Masjid-i-nabvi), while 5 starts and 7 stars Hotel owned by Saudi royal families are standing inside those mosques serving the superior and elite Muslims. They have made this spiritual experience just a corrupt business....And that is a slap at the face of Islam, Quran and even disrespect for Prophet(PBUH)'s teachings. Hajj is never meant to be for a corrupt business.

I am not against business, but, absolutely not at the expense of Hajj.

What makes Islam different from other religions is that this religion is based upon equality of humans regardless of status. If Muslims miserably fail to show such equality during Hajj days(rather they show extreme discrimination by dividing rich and poor in different sections) and during Hajj they rip off of every hajji by hook and crook.

Sadly, Hajj for them is a big joke.....and nothing else.

People like you, my dear are the supreme example of defending such corruptions. If they had to do corruptions which they call as businesses in the name of hajj by looting poor human beings then shame on us who defend those THUGS.

Please, I beg people like you to stop giving illogical and unreasonable support for such nonsense during hajj by calling it merely a business.......

If they have to do business, then they must stop this nonsense in the name of Hajj, enough is enough. They have made Hajj simply a joke and a big slap on poor peoples faces who gather their life savings just to perform Hajj....

There are other businesses that they should promote, like night clubs, theaters, casinos, shopping malls, housing schemes etc, etc, etc.....Why Hajj????

I do not agree with each and every word you wrote. Rather you have completely disappointed me, I thought that you are one of the chowk's sane voices, but, I guess I was wrong.

Thank you and bye.
PS:- If we do not understand the actual meaning of Hajj and it's teachings, then please, stop being condescending and try to get at least some understanding before pushing some illogical opinions....

THE MAIN MESSAGE OF HAJJ IS ONENESS WHEN WE WEAR SAME CLOTHES, PRAY IN SAME LANGUAGE, PRAY WITH EACHOTHER WITH UNITY REGARDLESS OF RACE, COLOR, GENDER, STATUS........Quran does not teach making Hajj as a corrupt business and to treat poor like worms......

If you have difficulty understanding this simple logic then you'll never understand anything.

Centre not helping Bengal at all: Mamata

Calcutta, May 15 (PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the Centre of not helping her government at all to overcome its financial crisis.

”The biggest hurdle being faced by us is that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, which we are supporting, has not at all helped us though we have been repeatedly telling them for the last one year and despite giving a commitment before the assembly elections,” Banerjee told PTI at the Writers Building, the state secretariat, here.

”We are waiting ... eagerly waiting to get a reply from the Centre,” Banerjee who had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 4th May and sought a three-year moratorium on central loan interest repayment, said.

While accusing the Centre of not helping her government financially, she said, “the Centre directly or indirectly helped the previous Left Front government a lot. I am not against that. You can help all state governments.

”But why did they allow the Left Front government to borrow funds? Without their permission, they could not have done so. It is their (Centre's) fault also,” she said.

Questioning why the Centre did not force the erstwhile LF government to introduce Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management, the chief minister said “at that time you did not raise this (FRBM) issue.

”We are annually paying interest of Rs 21,000 crore while our income is Rs 22,000 crore,” she said.

Yazan created a new topic Defene MinisterAnthony should resign corruption i in the forums.
LIFTING THE LID

- A.K. Antony and the problem of corruption
Diplomacy: K.P. Nayar

“Will Minister Antony resign?” More than any other, this is the one question that I have been asked by Americans in recent weeks about the defence minister who has been in the news for the better part of this year. Most of the people asking this question have some connection with the military-industrial complex in the United States of America or the country’s defence and strategic community.

The reality, howsoever unpalatable, is that few defence ministers can survive after incurring the personal displeasure of an American defence secretary, unless they are defence ministers in Russia and China or in countries like Iran or North Korea, which are in various stages of confrontation with the US.

A.K. Antony attracted the wrath of the Obama administration last year by his determined refusal to receive the then defence secretary, Robert Gates, who tried to inject himself into a US delegation that was to travel to India for the second round of the “strategic dialogue” between New Delhi and Washington. Gates wanted to lobby with Antony on behalf of American companies, which were then in the running for 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft being sought by the Indian air force, the biggest military aviation deal hitherto.

Antony made it clear to his cabinet colleagues, who were persuaded by the secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, to plead the case of the Pentagon’s civilian head, that if Gates arrived with Clinton he would go to the remotest location in Kerala where even his mobile phone had no signal for the duration of the American’s stay in New Delhi. Kerala was then in the middle of its state assembly election campaign, which gave Antony enough of an excuse to be in his home state.

The defence secretary did not give up. Gates used the ruse that he was demitting office in July and that he wanted to make a farewell call on Antony: at that point, April was being considered for the strategic dialogue, which eventually had to be postponed because of the defence minister’s insistence that he will not meet Gates as long as the aircraft contract was at a sensitive stage in the acquisition process.

Pentagon officials have told reporters on background that “the defence secretary was informed that it would be suicidal” for Antony to meet Gates and that this message was conveyed by Indian diplomats in Washington, who were negotiating the strategic dialogue arrangements with the Obama administration at that time.

At the end of April 2011, American companies were eliminated from the race for the multi-role combat planes, the US ambassador, Timothy Roemer, resigned the next day, and Gates lost any further interest in making his farewell call on Antony. The strategic dialogue eventually took place in July last year without a top-level defence participation.

After an unstated policy of having no ministerial exchanges in defence for 50 years — except on a solitary occasion, that too botched — US defence secretaries have lately taken exceptional interest in their Indian counterparts and senior Indian ministers in the last decade. The most famous of such exchanges was when Donald Rumsfeld, who was predecessor to Gates, called on the deputy prime minister, L.K. Advani, at his hotel on a Sunday in a well publicized effort to highlight a new chemistry in their ties.

Rumsfeld felt somewhat proprietary about the new defence relationship that the administration of George W. Bush considerably advanced with India, but luckily for New Delhi, he did not stay at the Pentagon long enough to see Washington’s hope of bagging the much-sought-after combat aircraft deal crumble into dust. There is no saying how the mercurial Rumsfeld would have reacted to such a disappointment. Gates, a man of great dignity, took the setback in his stride, at least in public.

The Pentagon is not alone in being disgruntled by Antony’s ways. He has consistently refused to visit Israel, which interchangeably shares the first or second spots with Russia among the sources of arms imports for India.

As if to add injury to insult, last month the defence ministry blacklisted Israel Military Industries for 10 years for allegedly paying bribes to secure contracts in India. IMI is not just another arms-seller. It is owned by the government in Tel Aviv, a leading weapons manufacturer for Israel’s defence forces.

It was not expected that Tel Aviv will take the ban lying down. Additionally, the ban by Antony’s ministry has cast a shadow over plans by the Netanyahu government to privatize IMI. There are now question marks about the timing of the privatization: if the world’s number one arms buyer — India — has found IMI unsuitable to do business with, it could have ramifications for investors seeking to buy into the company.

Those familiar with New Delhi’s lay of the land in such matters were not, therefore, surprised when grumblings of discontent, which began as whispers after Antony rebuffed Gates, grew louder following the rejection of American bids for the multi-role combat aircraft. It was not entirely unexpected that after the decision against the Israelis, Antony would be put in a spot by a steady flow of news stories and purportedly thoughtful op-ed articles.

The Americans and the Israelis are not alone in being at the receiving end of Antony’s efforts in full throttle to do what he can to curb corruption in defence purchases and create a level playing field. Singapore is a country with which India enjoys a relationship that is totally free of trouble. That has not, however, prevented Antony from banning Singapore Technologies Kinetics from future contracts for a decade.

This land systems and specialty vehicles company has launched an all out bid to clear its name, including recourse to the Supreme Court. It has also threatened to seek international arbitration, creating an irritant in bilateral relations.

Russian defence suppliers who have had a free run of New Delhi’s procurement process for many decades have similarly been slapped with punitive sanctions as part of Antony’s anti-graft drive. The defence minister has further angered Swiss, South African and many more arms manufacturers, lining up a formidable array of forces, all of which would be glad to see him move out of his present job.

Typically, nobody is criticizing Antony for cracking down on corruption. Instead, the strategy of those who want him out of the way is to attack Antony for slowing down the modernization of the armed forces by creating bottlenecks in arms purchases, and for creating a trust deficit between the civilian and uniformed segments of the defence establishment. All in all, the effort is to show up the defence minister as a man incapable of running an enterprise as vast and complex as the one for which he is tasked with providing leadership.

The age controversy about General V.K. Singh, the army chief, was the best thing that Antony’s detractors could have hoped for. Unfortunately for the defence minister, both propriety and constitutionality demand that he cannot truthfully tell his side of the story.

For instance, Antony personally believes that the army chief is not lying about his age and that General Singh was born in 1951. Similarly, the General has been a steadfast ally of Antony in what the latter is trying to do about corruption in the defence establishment. It may be a hard idea to sell, especially after a sensational story about troop movements, but the personal warmth and respect for each other between Antony and Singh are nothing short of total. Which is why there has been no move to dismiss the army chief or get him to resign. Even though Antony believes that General Singh made a mistake about his date of birth, an episode from his own past prevents Antony from doing anything about it except to follow the letter of the law. Antony was chief minister of Kerala when a similar controversy dogged the state government.

Raman Srivastava, an Indian Police Service officer of the Kerala cadre who became director-general of the state police and later headed the Border Security Force, was at the centre of this controversy. A mere five months separate him and his brother, Vikram Srivastava, an IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, who became director-general of the Central Reserve Police Force: a biological impossibility since both the brothers were born of the same mother.

As chief minister, Antony did not allow the Kerala cadre officer to change his date of birth. There is no way he would have acted any differently with General Singh. What is more, it is Antony’s estimate that there are at least 3,000 such cases of incorrect birthdays in government service records. That is a Pandora’s Box, which is best left shut.

Asian shares fall on Greece political uncertainty

Japan's Nikkei 225 index closed down 0.8% at 8,900.74, while South Korea's Kospi was down 0.77% to 1,898.96.

Asian shares had been much lower earlier in the session, and European markets opened higher on Tuesday after strong German growth figures.

Greek leaders will meet again on Tuesday to try to form a government.

The euro, which fell 0.7% in New York to $1.2824, recovered to $1.2866 at the start of European trading.

The uncertainty in Europe had sparked a tumble in global markets on Monday. The US benchmark Dow Jones index closed down 1%, while London's FTSE 100 share index and Germany's Dax both fell 2%.

Bank shares were the most affected, particularly in Spain and France.

Greek exit?
Eurozone finance ministers are in Brussels for their second day of talks, which include discussions on the problems in Greece and Spain.

Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, who is also head of the 17-nation Eurogroup, said there was an "unshakeable desire to keep Greece within the eurozone".

"We will do everything possible to achieve that."

Analysts say the possibility of a Greek exit from the eurozone is likely if it cannot pay its debts. That, in turn, would cause a ripple effect throughout Europe and its struggling economies.

Could the euro survive a Greek exit?
"The exit of Greece from the single currency has become probable; not so long ago it was impossible," analysts at DBS Bank in Singapore said in an email to Reuters news agency.

Exporters worried
The fall in Japanese shares on Tuesday was mainly due to exporters with exposure to Europe.

Mazda Motor, the Japanese carmaker with a high proportion of European sales, fell 2.7%.

Shares in Toyota Motor, Nissan Motor and Honda Motor all fell between 2% and 3%.

"The markets are in risk-off mode because everyone is thinking, if Greece leaves the euro, who's next?" said Norihiro Fujito, from Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley.

The yen, considered a haven asset, strengthened to a three-month high against the euro, which fell to 102.4 yen after being heavily sold off.

A man convicted of killing an Iranian nuclear scientist in Tehran two years ago has been hanged, Iran's state media report.

Majid Jamali Fashi, 24, was convicted of killing Professor Massoud Ali Mohammadi by detonating a bomb outside his home in January 2010.

Fashi was also accused of being a spy for the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and receiving $120,000 (£72,000) for the killing.

Israel does not comment on such claims.

"Majid Jamali Fashi, the Mossad spy and the person who assassinated Masoud Ali Mohammadi, our nation's nuclear scientist was hanged on Tuesday morning," Iran's Irna news agency reported.

Professor Massoud Ali Mohammadi was a particle physics professor at Tehran University. He is one of several high-profile nuclear scientists to have been killed in Tehran in recent years.

Iran has repeatedly accused Israel and the US of trying to harm its nuclear programme.

The two countries believe Iran is trying to acquire the technology to build nuclear weapons - something Tehran denies.

The country says it is developing its uranium enrichment program for peaceful purposes.

Fashi, who was tried and convicted in August 2011, appeared on Iranian TV in January confessing to the professor's killing, and giving details of the intelligence gathering operation he said he was involved in.

Opposition sources in Iran have accused the government of killing Professor Mohammadi because he was one of their supporters.

Yazan created a new topic Pakistan should pay $50 million each to US terror in the forums.
Seattle : WA : USA | May 12, 2012 at 1:45 PM PDT BY StephenManual

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher has dealt another heavy blow to already-tattered Pakistan: He has introduced the Pakistan Terrorism Accountability Act 2012 in the Congress, asking that Pakistan provide $50 million each to American citizens who became victim of terrorism supported by Pakistan and its intelligence agencies. The congressman said the compensation amount should be withheld from the assistance money being provided to Pakistan under different heads. Mr. Rohrabacher believes that Pakistan and its rogue intelligence agency – Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) – have been providing support to terrorists to attack US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan.
The congressman also said that Pakistan is still supporting the Haqqani network. The network is allegedly based in the tribal region of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan and terrorists linked to the outfit have been found involved in attacks on the US-led coalition troops in Afghanistan. US officials believe the group is not only being protected by the ISI, but also funded and trained to carry on with their terror acts. Many here in the US also believe that the ISI of Pakistan considers the group a strategic asset to them and therefore the powerful military of the country is reluctant to initiate action against it.
The draft bill submitted in the Congress also asks the secretary of defence to certify each month deaths of the US citizens caused either by the ISI or the Haqqani network, which is allegedly being protected by the ISI. The congressman believes that all the deaths being caused in Afghanistan are because of the Haqqani network. Top US officials including Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have asked Pakistan for a number of times to initiate a meaningful military action against the terrorist group based in North Waziristan. On the other hand, Pakistan army says the network is neither based in Pakistan nor is being supported by the ISI.
Mr. Rohrabacher has raised voice against Pakistan and its rogue intelligence agencies for a number of times and demanded the US government to stop civil and military aid to the country. Two days back, two other bills were also submitted in the Congress to press Pakistan for reopening of NATO supply routes and cut US aid to the country unless it takes meaningful action against terrorists and militants based in the tribal region of the country. In his speech on May 2 in Afghanistan, President Obama also urged Pakistan to abolish safe havens of terrorists and go after them as they are enemies of humanity.
With each passing day, Pakistan is being pressed by the United States for doing little against terrorists. The country is also being asked to reopen NATO supply routes that were shut down after NATO gunship helicopters killed around 24 Pakistani soldiers by firing at Salala outpost in November last year. The time has come that Pakistan mend its ways or face wrath of the international community.

May 11, 2012

This week’s “American Voices” essay is from Jon Meacham, a contributing editor at Time magazine.

In a year of tumult — of Selma, of Medicare, of growing violence in Vietnam — it is a largely forgotten moment. But it shouldn’t be. On Sunday, Oct. 3, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson came to New York harbor to sign the landmark immigration and nationality act, a bill that dramatically illustrates our national dependence on, and debt to, those who travel here from elsewhere in the world. “Our beautiful America was built by a nation of strangers,” Johnson said on that autumn Sunday. “From a hundred different places or more they have poured forth into an empty land, joining and blending in one mighty and irresistible tide.”

Johnson’s words are worth remembering as we debate which highly skilled workers to allow into the United States — or, more precisely, which highly skilled workers educated here we should try to keep. We are, of course, a nation of immigrants. And it’s important to recall that we’ve always grown stronger the more widely we’ve opened our arms. Not everyone, naturally, has agreed with that. Immigration boomed at the end of the 19th century. Waves came from Italy, Russia, and Austria-Hungary, which included parts of Poland. In 1896, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge proposed a literacy test to restrict the influx of “Italians, Russians, Poles, Hungarians, Greeks, and Asiatics.” Lodge liked “English-speaking [immigrants] … Germans, Scandinavians, and French.”

The 1965 bill abolished national quotas and allowed naturalized citizens to send for relatives. If you shut doors, you may think you’re securing yourself, but in fact you’re locking yourself in, foreclosing possibilities and limiting growth. We should be smart and liberal — in the 19th century sense of the term liberal, meaning free — with the right kinds of visas for much-needed high-tech workers. That’s the American way, and while the American way surely isn’t always the right one, in this case it is. In 1965, Johnson mentioned the “joyous sound of long-ago voices” on Ellis Island. We have it in our power to hear new voices right now, and we should do all we can to make room for them in a country that’s made room for all of us.

Inflation rises to 7.23% in April as vegetable prices shoot up

New Delhi, May 14 (PTI): Inflation moved up to 7.23 per cent in April on account of spurt in prices of vegetables, meat, milk and pulses, although onion and fruits showed a declining trend.

Inflation, as measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), was 6.89 per cent in March. In April last year, it was 9.74 per cent.

Vegetables turned costlier by 60.97 per cent during April. In March, the rate of price rise in vegetables was 30.57 per cent. Pulses were costlier by 11.29 per cent.

Milk became costlier by 15.51 per cent, while rice and cereals turned costlier by 5.68 per cent and 5.8 per cent respectively. Prices of potato rose by 53.44 per cent.

Besides, eggs, meat and fish prices rose 17.54 per cent during the month, slightly lower from 17.71 per cent in March.

However, according to the official data released on Monday, inflation for the overall food items category was 10.49 per cent in April, as against 10.66 per cent in March.

Onion prices declined 12.11 per cent in April. The rate of decline was 24.23 per cent in March.

Food articles have a 14.3 per cent share in the WPI basket.

Inflation in the price of manufactured goods increased marginally to 5.12 per cent in April, from 4.87 per cent in March.

The headline inflation number for February was revised upwards to 7.39 per cent, from the provisional estimate of 6.95 per cent.

Inflation in overall primary articles inched up to 9.71 per cent in April, from 9.62 per cent in March.

On year-on-year basis, among manufactured items, iron grew dearer by 17.98 per cent while edible oil prices rose by 11.10 per cent. Inflation in tobacco products and basic metals was 9.48 per cent and 10.72 per cent respectively.

Non-food primary articles, which include fibres and oilseeds increased slightly by 1.61 per cent in April. In March, it was (-)1.2 per cent.

Inflation in the fuel and power segment was 11.03 per cent on an annual basis. The rate of price rise was 10.41 per cent in the previous month.

Experts said the inflationary pressure, driven by prices of food articles, will keep the pressure on the government to remove supply side bottlenecks.

Overall inflation hovered at double digit for most of 2010 and 2011. The Reserve Bank of India hiked key policy rates 13 times, totalling 350 basis points, between March 2010 and October 2011 to tame inflation.

Since January, RBI has resorted to injecting liquidity into the financial system, by reducing cash reserve ratio for banks. Besides, it has called for fiscal steps by the government to combat inflation.

However, in its annual monetary policy on April, RBI cut key lending rate by 50 basis points to lower borrowing costs amid falling industrial and economic growth.

RBI has projected inflation to be around 6.5 per cent by March 2013, with a caution that it will remain sticky and there is need to arrest the decline in economic growth.

Maoists kill 6 jawans

SHEENA K
Raipur, May 13: Maoists killed six CISF jawans travelling in a Jeep and their civilian driver in Dantewada on Sunday night.

The ambush, around 9pm, happened half a kilometre from Kirandul, the township where the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) plant is located.

The six jawans of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) were on their way to the plant site just before change of shift when the Maoists opened fire at the vehicle.

The jawans did not get any time to take position and retaliate.

The civilian who died was the Jeep’s driver, said Bastar inspector-general of police T.J. Langkumer.

The rebels took away the weapons of the six securitymen.

Additional forces from Kirandul reached the spot around 11pm.

Till then, the bodies were lying on the spot.

7 Indians among 13 dead in Nepal plane crash

Kathmandu, May 14 (PTI): Eleven Indians were among 15 passengers killed on Monday when a private plane with 21 people on board crashed in northern Nepal while trying to land at high- altitude Jomsom airport, a popular Himalayan trekking spot.

The Dornier aircraft belonging to the Agni Air crashed when it hit top of a hill near Pokhara while returning to the Jomsom airport, said an official at the Rescue Coordination Committee of Tribhuvan International Airport.

‘Seven Indian nationals and six Nepalese were killed in the crash,” the official said, adding rescuers have so far recovered nine bodies from the wreckage.

Eight people on board, including the three-crew members and four Indians, have been rescued alive from the crash site, he said.

The injured people were taken to a nearby hospital in Pokhara where conditions of the four Indians were critical.

The aircraft was heading towards Jomsom in the morning when it hit the hill, the official said, adding that there are possibilities of a technical fault.

Detail reports from the crash site are awaited.

The high-altitude Jomsom airport, about 200 km northwest of the capital, is a gateway to a popular tourism and trekking destination situated more than 2,600 m above sea level.

When contacted, Indian Embassy officials said they were trying to collect the details, as there was some confusion over the nationalities of the passengers on board the ill-fated plane.

The passengers had chartered the flight to take them from the central tourist hub of Pokhara to Muktinath, a sacred place for Hindus and Buddhists at the foot of the Thorong La Himalayan mountain pass, an official said.

Agni Air marketing manager Pramod Pandey said two Danish nationals were among the passengers, although their condition was not known.

“It's not that much difficulty to land at the Jomsom airport. We are using experienced pilots over there. So, this pilot who flying this aircraft has a lot of flying hours,” he added.

HYDERABAD: The city police have launched a manhunt for four persons belonging to the Hindu community who they suspect triggered the communal disturbances in Old City last Sunday by hurling a piece of beef on the walls of the Hanuman Temple at Kurmaguda in Madannapet. All the four are residents of Kurmaguda and in their late twenties, police said, and claimed that the accused would be nabbed within the next 48 hours.

Reaping political benefits by intensifying communal polarization in the city is said to be the motive behind the attack. "We have reliable information confirming the role of four Hindu extremists in the Kurmaguda incident that started the recent communal disturbances. One of the accused was earlier arrested in the post-Bakrid communal violence incidents in the city. "All the accused are on the run and special teams have been formed to nab them," a top investigating officer told TOI.

While the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the city police is probing the 26 cases of communal clashes that took place in Old City since last Sunday, there is a special emphasis on the investigation into the Kurmaguda Hanuman temple desecration as it was the triggering point for the series of clashes. SIT officers visited Kurmaguda on Thursday and questioned several people. "We have specific information that the incident was executed by locals from the same community," said a source. Intelligence sleuths are also closely monitoring the probe and confirmed the role of Hindu fundamentalist elements behind the attack.

An officer, who is part of the probe, revealed that the four suspects who have been on the run now are just mere pawns in the big political game and the main challenge would be to get to the conspirators who used them to reap political benefits. In the 2010 communal clashes, the SIT team had made several arrests but failed to nail the conspirators who provoked the mob. The same was the situation in the probe related to the post- Bakrid communal attacks in 2011. "A middle level politico interested in contesting the assembly election in 2014 is possibly the brain behind the attack," police sources averred. Analysts said that this gave a new dimension to the communal tension and revealed that polarization was being deliberately fomented to garner votes.

Police have also confirmed the involvement of local Hindus in a temple desecration at Nandi Musalaiguda in Bahadurpura police limits and suspect a similar conspiracy behind the temple desecration at Moghulpura. "While the Nandi Musalaiguda temple desecration was engineered to ensure the posting of a police picket in their communally sensitive area, we suspect that the Moghulpura incident was to instigate the people. Thankfully, the perpetrators at Moghulpura did not succeed," said an official.

SRINAGAR | LEH: Tension gripped an Army regiment here after a group of officers and jawans clashed following an incident of alleged molestation involving an orderly and the reported capturing of the armoury by the agitated soldiers.

The trigger for the clash took place late on Thursday afternoon in Nyoma sub-district, located 150 km from Leh, when a jawan allegedly misbehaved with the wife of a Major who beat him up, sources said.

The officers and jawans of 226 Field Regiment were undergoing firing practice at this place.

The Major did not permit other jawans to allow any medical treatment for the 'sahayak', fuelling anger among the colleagues who objected, the sources said.

The news reached the Commanding Officer of the regiment who was camping in nearby police guest house. He immediately reached the scene and, gauging the mood, shouted at the Major for his reluctance to allow the injured 'sahayak' to be taken for treatment.

Seeing this, the Major along with five of his officer colleagues beat the Commanding Officer, a Colonel, in front of jawans. This angered the jawans who then went berserk and beat the other officers with sticks, the sources said.

The Commanding Officer was immediately shifted to Leh hospital. Nearly 40 to 50 jawans then started a search for Major rank officers. Two were found in nearby camp and beaten up, the sources said, adding they were rescued after an intervention by the local police.

Three Majors were still hiding and are believed to have moved towards Chashool army camp located on Sino-India border, the sources said. The 226-Field Regiment Unit has been cordoned and senior officers of Leh-based 14 Corps have rushed to the scene.

Tempers cooled down on Friday afternoon when General Officer- in-Command of Third Infantry division assured the jawans, who had captured the armoury, that action will be taken against the erring officers, the sources said.

The sources said though the jawans had armoury under their control, no withdrawal of weapons has been resorted to.

Superintendent of Police (Leh) Vivek Gupta was camping in Nyoma along with heavy reinforcements following a report by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate that army jawans, armed with sticks and knives, were holding protest, the sources said. Commenting on the situation, the Army Headquarters in Delhi said "due to some administrative reasons, there was a scuffle in an artillery unit during field firing.

GURGAON: In past four months, Gurgaon which has recorded over 100 such incidents. At least one suicide, on an average, is taking place every 36 hours in the city as victims hang themselves, consume poison or jump from a height, according to police figures which show that 104 people have ended their lives in the first four months of 2012.

Besides the alarming trend of suicides, there has been a huge jump in the number of suicide attempts as well. Nearly 88 of the suicide victims since January were aged between 20 and 40 and a bulk of them were in their 20s. A total of 13 victims were aged 15-19 years, police data showed.

Hanging oneself, consuming poison and jumping from heights seemed to be the most preferred modes of committing suicide in Gurgaon, bordering the national capital, that is home to several high rise buildings with offices of multinational companies.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) P.K. Mehta said they were willing to do every possible thing to prevent suicides. "But in case of harassment or property disputes, police can take action only if the victim approached them."

In the last four months, 51 people hanged themselves, 33 ended their lives by consuming poison and 17 jumped to death in Gurgaon, official figures showed.

These figures do not include cases in which people set themselves on fire, ended their lives by drowning, jumping in front of trains or resorted to some other way of committing suicide, an official said.

In January, six people, including a woman, hanged themselves, 12 people consumed poison while five died after jumping from high rises, say police.

,In February, the number of suicides due to hanging was 14, poison consumption seven and jumping from high buildings was eight. In March, the figures were 15, six and six respectively.

In April, there were 13 suicides due to hanging, six because of poison consumption and six due to falls from high rises.

The reasons for the suicide spurt in Gurgaon may be varied, but experts suspect depression could be the biggest killer.

Doctor Bhramdeep Sindhu, senior consultant clinical psychologist at the civil hospital here, said everyone occasionally felt the blues but these feelings were fleeting and passed away in a couple of days.

"When a person has a depression disorder, it interferes with daily life, normal functioning and causes distress to both the person with the disorder and those who care for him or her," he said.

"Depression is a common but serious illness and most who experience it need treatment to get better," he said, adding that daily almost 30-35 such patients with similar problems were consulting him.

The chief medical officer of a government hospital here told IANS: "Increasing suicidal tendency is a social as well as medical problem. We are ready to provide psychologists at special camps if some NGO takes the initiative.",,,,,,,,
