If there ever was a red flag
Before the green
If there ever was a silver lining
Before the crack of dawn
I wouldn’t be seeing gray, through my pinhole, today.
If there ever was a reason
If there ever was a way
If there ever was a time, or a place
To do everything the right way
I wouldn’t
be who I am, today.
If there ever was a dream
If there ever was a thought - or a vibe
That I could ever sway
From what seemed so strong
That it could never fray
I wouldn’t be on the bridge that I am, today.
If there ever was a meaning
If there ever was a wish
So immortal, impractical and so blind
It could leave the one of us
Crippled for life -
A wrong wouldn’t feel so right, like it does, today.
If there ever was a day
If there ever was a night
Or a dawn, or a dusk
That did not serve as an excuse
To haunt my thoughts with yours
My mind wouldn’t be where it is, today.
If there ever was a heart
And a mind, and a fate
And all three agreed to do exactly as told
It wouldn’t be so hard –
So hard to have my story told
The way I want it
I wouldn’t be writing this, like I am, today.
