Democracy and Me

An ordinary individual, me:
citizen in the world’s most populous democracy.

Democracy?
Yes, government by the people.

People……
we have them in plenty.
With freedom to talk
and stand and block
exits and entrances.
Freedom to pee or shit
spread garbage and spit,
anywhere, everywhere.

Wreak vengeance on buses,
set fire and smash offices.
Vote crooks to power,
get conned and then shower
adoration and money
on Godmen, spewing honey
from slimy, forked tongues.

So much freedom or mayhem:
Is that true or a sham?

And yet, from this swamp
there still burns a lamp,
a small flame of truth
to guide us and our youth.

Where, what, who is this light?
We all have to fight
to find and protect
to see and effect
any good that is left.

We are the people.
Democracy…..
BY THE PEOPLE.

So we can’t just whine
and let things decline.

Who else will “do”
except me and you
what needs to be done
till truth has won?
