What Am I?
They ask me, "what are you?"
And to that I do reply,
"a cold sun without heat I am
a philomel without the taper.
A nightingale with no rose I am
an ink pot with no ink.
A flask without no drinkers!
Alexander without Hephaestion I am
Antony removed from Cleopatra.
Moses without the burning bush I am
Lazarus, without the Messiah.
Potiphar’s wife, with no Joseph I am
Solomon without a throne.
Socrates without philosophy I am
Hippocrates with no remedy!
Khayyam without his Quatrains I am
Rumi severed from Shams."
Ever since I lost her, the truth
is I do not know what I am.
