Escalation of Hostilities in Middle East

Chowk Staff July 20, 2006

Tags: war , middle-east

The current escalation of hostilities in the Middle East is dangerous for the whole world. Sadly, no super power seems to be concerned or willing to pressure the combatants to cease the hostilities. To allow this dangerous situation to unravel unchecked is ominous.

Nations">United Nations has lost its clout after its role in Iraq war; even otherwise it is largely gutless. The only super power, which is head and shoulders above the others, is deemed to be partisan by the Middle Eastern countries. It is not trusted by them although it is called upon to play its historic role for dampening the blazing situation.

The suggestion expressed by Senator Chuck Hagel (R, Nebraska) is sane to which few if any seem to be paying any attention. He said, “The United States must show leadership and directly engage this crisis. The United States is the only country with the ability to lead a coalition to prevent the region from spiraling out of control.” He also suggested that the ”administration should appoint Colin Powell or James A. Baker III, both former secretaries of state, as a prominent envoy.” Even if such an envoy failed to produce quick results, it would be much better than doing nothing. We at Chowk believe and urge that such an engagement is fruitful and should be tried now than later.

As members of the world humanity, we ask the United States to play its leadership role and the European Union to help putting a ceasefire in place. It is not the question of who is right or who is wrong. The urgency is to prevent general conflagration.
