The foundation of Hindu right wing ideology is based upon the 1920’s western European fascism movement. The British colonial experience in India left an undeniable mark on the Hindu psyche to relate to the Germanic/fascist ideal of purity of race and in India’s case purity of Hindu “Aryan” civilization which got corrupted by the Muslim invaders and thus polluting the presumed pure Hindu social identity.

Such artificial claims are the corner stone of the prevalent Hindu thought process. For them Indian Muslims pose the biggest threat to the security of a Hindu dominated India. BJP government education minister Murli Manohar Joshi has started a program of brain washing the young generation of India by teaching them intolerance through publication of textbooks that raise suspicion and hate towards the minority Muslim population this sentence taken from a first grader text book will further elaborate this point, ”Kabeer is a nice boy, even though he is a Muslim”.

India claims to be a pluralistic state yet in recent years the Hindu right has vociferously opted the “Bande Mataram” song written by Bengali novelist Bankimchandre Chaterjee. BJP influenced the change of national songs sung in Indian schools today. Tagore whose song “Jana Gana Mana” was written in 1911 and is the current Indian national anthem is inclusive in nature whereas, “Bande Matram” is exclusionary in nature that Muslims will never be equal citizens.

India today has to make a choice between ethnic conflict based on the notion of mother nation as reflected by “Bande Matram” or a pluralistic India envisioned by great scholar Tagore’s “Jana Gana Mana”.

In 1925 one of the founders of the Hindu Right, V.D. Savarkar presented his case that true Indian is for whom the motherland and holy land were one and the same. Therefore, Muslims and Christians could never be true Indians.

The Hindu right politicians have distorted the image of a peace loving Hindu religion as projected by Gandhi. In their current arsenal of hate they are effectively using imagery of Hindu gods such as Hanuman as a ferocious enemy of Muslims Ganesha as a muscle warrior holding a sword to kill Muslims in the name of Hindu purity this dogmatic religious indoctrination is transforming the minds of millions of impoverished and illiterate Indian Hindus.

Hindu right has many interesting characters that spun this ideology of hate. The 21st century fascist, Parveen Togadia openly calls for violence and ethnic cleansing against Indian Muslims. The VHP zealot K.K. Shastri has his own version of linguistic and racial theories. According to him, “Aryan” culture existed in its purest form in the time of Vedas. It was so powerful that it spread all over the world. He believes that the Native Americans are actually descendants of Indians because they wear a thread common in there garment as a “Janoi” that Hindus wear.

Any historian, anthropologist, linguist will differ in opinion about these absurd theories but this is what is being fed to the new supposedly, “Enlightened” generation of Hindus to overcome years of inferiority complex embedded in the turbulent sub-continental history. These invented histories and intellectual theories are today shaping the mob mentality of future fundamentalist Hindus and will shape the relations between them and the oppressed minorities who have to pay for injustices meted out to Hindus at the hands of Muslim invaders and Christian missionaries.

Hindu right wingers are happy that since 9/11 America is pre-occupied with the war on terror so it now has a free card to play by portraying itself as a passive religion in a secular democratic country under siege by Muslim terrorists therefore, it can use this as an excuse to oppress and violate Muslims of India with impunity enjoying backing of the west.

Gujarat has been called an “experiment” that had succeeded in spreading the campaign of hate all over India. In VHP extremist leader Adhok Singhal’s words, “this Newtonian logic”, as it is a, “matter of pride,” “a befitting reply to what has been perpetrated on the Hindus in the last thousand years. Gujarat has shown the way, and our journey of victory will begin and end on the same path.”

Indian secularism has now revealed its fake facade of a pluralistic society which is inclusive of all minorities. The main characters of hate mongers are the obvious ones, BJP, VHP, RSS, Bajrang Dal INC who should be put in the category of banned terrorist outfits by the international community and show their true colors of hate and violent repression.

Today, when a Hindu shouts an obscenity at Pakistan the Indian Muslim has to shout two to show their patriotism towards India. It’s high time that Hindus do some soul searching if they truly wish to be a future economic power. An economic might which is shared by all of its citizens.
