Translation: Two Poems of Mirabai

Mirabai: A 16th Century Hindu mystical poetess

Ari aeri Uda lagi ko nam na leye

Uda, don't tell me what's love

Uda, don't tell me what's love
Love is water to the fish
It dies without it
Love is drum beats to the deer
They risk their life to hear
Moths burn in love with flames
And I love my Dark One
I kiss his feet.

Tanik Hari chitovoji meri aur

Look at me once

Look at me once
Just once, my Love
My eyes always on you
Why do you not look at me?
Is you heart stony hard?

I ask just one thing -
Look at me lovingly
My Dark One, to me
You're the only one
To you there are many

Since early this morning
I've been standing still
Praying in front of you
But you always evade me

Dear everlasting Love
Please fulfill my desires
I'll give my life for you.
