Call me mom.. or dad!

by asadaly November 08, 2009

Since most mothers and schools aren't doing their jobs right, I will take the pain and step in. I belong to Karachi where you are bound to run into many classes of people, I will try to go through this without generalizing. I am hoping to offend the least number of people here, bear with me please.

I see a lot of people in daily life completely eliminating chances of their own social acceptance. They tend to forget or ignore or don't know any better, trivial things like I will be stating here. Reasons can be mothers that don't know better or are too busy with their own social climbing, or schools that don't want to take the pain of educating their students, (or the teacher is in most cases under-qualified) their definition of 'education' is restricted to literacy.

Here is a list of things most young Pakistanis do out of ignorance, apathy or one of the reasons stated in the earlier paragraphs.

At the table:
* Chewing with their mouths open
* Talking while eating or being noisy with food
* Digging trenches in their plates
* Biting onto spoons and forks
* Reaching over other people for things at the table
* Slurping out hot beverages
* Leaving soiled tissue papers on the table
* Talking about a bad stomach or gruesome details of illnesses etc

On the road:
* Spitting
* Reclining their seat all the way back to appear 'cool'
* Using streets as public dust bins (I'm guilty too, sometimes)

Inside a bathroom:
* (For men) Not lifting the seat or bothering with wiping off any 'spills'
* Leaving the soap out of the dish
* Leaving a wet torn toilet roll dangling
* Wetting the entire box of tissues
* Wiping their faces with towels in public bathrooms
* Leaving hair in the sink after brushing or in some cases washing them

At banks:
* Not waiting for the customer ahead of them to finish their business before resting their elbows on the counter
* Looking at other people's documents

Personal:
* Not bathing
* Not bothering with deodorant
* Cleaning ears in public with the pinky or a key
* Picking teeth with rolled up/edges of business cards
* Touching/tapping/brushing past instead of a polite 'excuse me'
* Trying to look into other people's cell phones
* Giggling/smiling/laughing etc at funerals
* Smoking in tight spaces with other people in them, passive smoking also irritates most smokers
* Coughing, sneezing or yawning without covering their faces or stepping away
* Belching or passing gas shamelessly and finding it funny or simply natural
* Laughing or joking in hospitals, they might not know why the next person is there
* Preaching religion to random people, usually offends me
* Pointing out flaws in other people's appearance, belongings etc
* Resting on other people's cars or sitting on them
* Scratching in public

That's about all I can think of right now, readers who can see the point of this might want to add a few things here and also share on other places for people to read. Let's all make Pakistan better, let the government deal with the Taliban and our 'friendly' neighbors.

I was going to write something like above but it's already written so well :) reason is that ...

this morning I stopped at a petrol pump and opened the car door and the attendent who was a filipino said "you smell good sir, where you from?" I said, "pakistan", he seemed surprised, don't mind me sir but pakistanis and indians, most of them smell, must be the food, I laughed, "no, try spelling the word 'deodrent' often to them !!!"

my mother is a clean-junkie, when we were growing up she was very strict over keep the house clean as we as ourselves. especially keeping the bathroom clean, floor must not be wet, clean the toilet seat after you are done, clean the sink with tissue after use, i.e. leave no water drops either on the floor or sink, and for a while it seemed like alot but now looking back, I am glad she made us all do that cause now I can see the difference when I visit other places or others come to my place.

& the way we eat, she taught us how to help ourselves with food, stuff like, when you are pouring rice, make sure it does not fall out, how to properly eat bread and how to avoid bread crums falling on you. and how much on your spoon is 'alot', stuff like that :)

normally we are used to wearing same cloth twice or but she would tell us if you wore it once, don't wear it again or you will "smell", and I used to think how come? now I know she was right!!!

since we asian sweat alot, I have noticed most of us do not pay attention to the sweat from arm pits which is shown on thier shirts, you can see people with good personality but soon you see that "sweat patch" and their image is lost.

back in the days. deodrents were not that common, I remember mother used to tell us to use "phatkari" for sweat, she would say, you will not sweat even when you are sweating alot. even now when I go out, she calls me up and say "let me smell you", cause smell is something that really gives you a bad image no matter what car you are in or what suite you are wearing.

some people are smelly even after use of deo, well that is because of the food they eat, change your eating habits and it will fix that problem.

Another thing, bad breath, the 'masala' food that we eat contributes to it alot, plus most of the people take tea or coffee alot, not only it has effect on your breath but on your teeth as well giving them a light brown color, so make sure after tea or coffee you goggle and clean your teeth with water & make sure to chew on gum after your meal, make it a habit. it elminates the bad breath resulting of food. & please !!! don't forget to brush after you wake up !!!

change your habits, try having mint-tea or ginger-tea, not only it's good for your stomach & health, it helps reducing bad breath as well. bad smell comes from the stomach, not teeth, mouth only contributes if you have gengivitis, but regular brusing and use of mouth wash takes care of it.

scratching in public, oh boy !!! that is so common.you may not notice but the public does and when they do, you become a big loser !!! the solution is easy, "keep yourself clean", wash off properly, use dettol or some similar soap & before you go out, put on some cream like "itch guard", it's an indian medicine but really works great. and you will not feel any itch at all due to sweating.

Surprisingly people spend money to improve their or their kids’ personality but ignore this essential part, which doesn’t cost anything.

This is valid for not only kids but for everyone:

Learn to make proper queues.

Learn to be patient.

Learn to be polite and pass smile.

Learn to offer help.
