Dudipatsar Lake

Posted: May 15, 2009 Fri 02:45 am     Views: 685    Interacts: 0

Located in the upper Kaghan valley, Dudipatsar lake is one of the most ravishing earthly places where mother nature unleashes itself with all its divine purity. While I fumble for words, the only terms that can do a bit of justice to the description of the amazing place and the captivating atmosphere that pervades there are perhaps-calmness, serenity, tranquility and peace. The beauty, charm and the aura that the lake and its environs exude make it an exclusive lifetime camping experience.

Nestled between the snow capped mountains, the lake is located at an altitude of nearly 4000 m (13000ft.) ASL. It is accessible by means of mules, ponies or foot only during the extreme summer months of July to September.

In order to cross the river, you have to take an early start from ‘Basal’ situated along the river Kunhar at the jeep track, when the currents are relatively week. An eight hour trail along the water streams, while you trudge up some rocks but mostly continue along shelving green slopes amidst mountains and gourges, lead to the wonderful lake. The trek is above tree line and there are only occasional make shift human settlements if any at all. Water is available but you need to have ample food in stock for a couple of days. Weather is highly unpredictable and may turn inclement any moment.

While the sunset, sun rise and early morning breeze are heavenly and so is the view, most people prefer to walk back. However, there is a lot more to explore. A couple of hours hike up the surrounding mountains leads you to a beautiful high altitude plateau. A climb up a steep ridge carries you across to ‘Sarral pass’ that affords an astounding view of ‘Sarral lake’ located not too far away down the mountains.

The trek leads to ‘Jalkhad pass’ that hosts a remote view of ‘Nanga Parbat’ on a clear sunny day. It continues all the way to ‘Noori Nar’ top, ‘Dawarian pass’ and ‘Ratti Galli’ i.e if you are looking for a week long heavenly excursion. The breathtaking views of lovely valleys and a number of lakes are captivating to say the least.

From Ratti Galli the trek descends into most beautiful valleys, lush green fields and villages of Kaghan valley and finally terminates at ‘Barwai’ near ‘Batakundi’ on the Kaghan – Babusar road.
