First Fly Epigentics Lab in Pakistan


A post doctoral position is available from August 2009 in Dr. Muhammad Tariq’s newly established group at the LUMS School of Science and Engineering.



We seek to identify the molecular mechanisms regulating the plasticity in epigenetic cellular memory in response to genetic as well as environmental variation using Drosophila. The successful candidate will use genetic, molecular and cytological methods to dissect genetic and molecular architecture underlying phenotypic plasticity.


He/she will also actively contribute in establishing the First Fly Epigenetics Lab in Pakistan as well as assist regularly in teaching undergraduate students.



Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should have a PhD in molecular biology or related disciplines. Experience with fly genetics, epigenetics, biochemistry, transcriptomics, or imaging will be considered advantageous. Candidates who are close to finishing PhDs are also encouraged to apply.

Biography

Muhammad Tariq received his PhD in Molecular Cell Biology from Friedrich Miescher Institute (FMI) for Biomedical Research, Basel, Switzerland. In 2003, he joined Renato Paro’s laboratory as a post-doctoral fellow at Zentrum fuer Molekulare Biologie Heidelberg (ZMBH), Germany. He was awarded EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) long term fellowship for his postdoctoral studies at ZMBH. Since 2006, he is working as a Senior Assistant at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering, an ETH Zurich Department in Basel, Switzerland. He has recently joined SSE-LUMS and will start working there from August 2009.

His research interests include epigenetic gene regulation during development and molecular link between epigenetics and disease development. To pursue his research interests, he will primarily focus on a paradigm based on Polycomb group (PcG) and Trithorax group (TrxG) proteins using Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) and mammalian cultured cells. The PcG/TrxG proteins act at the level of chromatin and are involved in cell fate determination and maintenance of cellular identity during development.
