Gosaba Island

Posted: Jun 26, 2004 Sat 11:37 am     Views: 4342    Interacts: 11

Gosaba Island - The oldest successful Consumers Co-operative Movement in India lies about 110 kilometres South East of a recently resurgent Kolkata. Situated unconnected to the rest of the country except by boat within the Sunderbans (formed by the waters of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna riverine systems), with sandbanks and channels shifting and changing with almost every tide, where national borders are as transparent as the murky brackish waters moving languidly towards the Bay of Bengal. No connection to the national grids - power, road, rail, air. 100% literacy. 100% electricity using renewable energy resources (solar, wind

Veeresh,
Bad Luck about not being able to see Tigers. I’ve heard a lot about them...

Atleast you get to visit the overall delta. I’ve been in Calcutta for two years but was too lazy to visit. In fact I’ve missed out on many other places too (Darjeeling, Sikkim, North East). Managed to visit only Konark...

Keep these kind of photo features coming.. I liked it immensely.

Thanks,
AV Krishna

Thanks for the info, Veeresh.

Bad lighting can be a dampener, but I think even with the simplest cameras good pix can be taken. I have seen the utter wastage of these hot-shot photographers...on one assignment the chap accompanying me clicked three rolls, 36 exposures each, to get a couple of decent ones.

Anyway, I am still not comfy with the digital and still use the auto-focus. Quite happy with the results...

And of course you are welcome...to say thank you:)

#3...veeresh..i will, the ’tempered tone’, i mean...but just when i pledged to myself to do that, lo and behold, there’s another diatribe by ’ferzanaversey’.... i’m tempering right now...why don’t you take photographs of delhi and post them??...i’ve been there when i was very young and i’d like to see what the city looks like now...maybe someone in pakistan can take photos of their cities and post it too..this would be better than discussing the same old tripe that we just can’t get enough of, it seems...have a good one.

farzana/7 . . . boss, I have never taken photographs before, and this was a very cloudy day most of the time (bad light too). Basic digital camera, too, no lens-shens.

The Sunderbans are fairly easy to access now, and for day trippers, you do need to get up early though:-

a) Take the local train to Fort Canning, an hour from Park Street, and ride the country boats from there. Fairly over-populated parts of the delta, but higher frequency of boats.

b) Take a roadways bus to Basanthi, two hours from the Basanthi turn-off on the Motorway leading towards Dum-Dum Airport, and ride the country boats from there. Remote, with sporadic boat service, subject to weather.

c) Contact West Bengal Tourism and get on the organised tours. Very expensive, aimed at the luxury tourist.

In all cases, Odomos and sensible clothes to keep mosquitoes away.(light full sleeve shirts with light trouser) with a spare set wrapped in a polythene bag. Sporadic mobile phone coverage.

Yes, back to Delhi was pure irony, the private cable diggers were on a typical Friday evening through Monday morning digging frenzy. That’s front of my house, by the way.

You are correct, that IS a handsome man. Thank you, thank you.

Hi Veeresh:

Had only heard about this island. A few years ago on a trip to Kolkata and Shanti Niketan, I wanted to visit the Sunderbans, but one had to get official permission and for some reason they were wary and made it difficult. So this is one dream that has to be fulfilled...

Re. your pix, I think you are so much better with people...some nice ones here, though the one of Tagore’s house does have a sadness to it. For landscapes, I personally think a specific focus is important...just my opinion.

Your caption, ’Back to civilisation, Delhi’ was so wonderfully ironical! Or wasn’t it???

Did you use a self-time for ’Handsome Man’? If not, then you cannot claim credit for it (only kidding) :)

Ispahani/3 - point is not whether Sunderbans are India or Bangladesh, in any case the riverine borders are fluid. Point is that the over 100 year old Consumers/Coop movement in Gosaba which was started by a non-evangelising Scotsman after the 1857 freedom struggle continues to day.

nikki7777/4 - thank you for your kind words. Make my day by taking a slightly more tempered tone in the rest of your interacts. Informatively, the last photo is not a backwater street, but the "road" in front of my house in one of Delhi’s "posh" localities, destroyed by private enterprise seeking to lay cables.

khamkwa/5 - thank you. I have not taken too many photographs before, other than the usual family stuff and maybe of rallying cars/bikes. I shall try to place more on chowk as I travel. wish I had carried a camera into Pakistan in April’04.

Veeresh jee,
gentleman doctor and downtown basanti are well composed. the doctor’s portrait is very powerful, whereas downtown basnati captures movement nicely.

I want to take this opportunity to offer an apology.I referred to you an ’ old poonjabi poof’ in one of the interacts.OOps.I should have said ’gizzly old bear’ instead. You do have a wicked sense of humor though!!!...the last photo of a backwater street under construction under the caption ’back to civilization’ eh??...you are an indian. That i can say for sure!!!.

Sincerely,

nikki7777

Gosaba Island

110 kilometres South East of a recently
resurgent Kolkata. Situated unconnected
to the rest of the country except by boat
within the Sunderbans

Neither it is near WBengal
nor in front of Kolkata
within 200 km shore limit

It shows that It is a Bangladesh Island .

Bangladesh is India’s personal property
For this part of subderban seem just offshore
Bangldesh Sunderban.

It really reflects ownership of muslim properties in
muslim area of thailand indonesia malaysia muslim
kashmir muslim Bangldesh in hindu hands.

Killing muslims arresting legitimate govt ruling muslims
PRESIDENT generals ,installing illicit indian or coalition
ruler is illicit.

The attempt is to demonstrate that it is being
done legally.

Sovereignty is fake as if being given to muslim
intellectuals.

millions of local inhabitants of former OIC islands have
been killed like in Iraq.

Justice done like arrested saddam Hussain -generals
handled by indian bush installed people with quick disposal
of evidence reflect what Indians and Bush coalition is doing
in muslim territory.

Thank you AV Krishna, first time I’ve tried to take decent snaps outdoors . . . no tigers I went with this environmental group (ICEF) from Canada and the focus was on renewable energy . . . there are supposed to be some crocodiles ("muggars") in these waters and that apart, the tigers are there, too, but we didn’t see any ./ / / yes Sir, the handsome bearded man is yours truly . . .
