When they developed the first nuclear bomb as part of the Manhatten Project, there was some concern that the chain reaction unleashed by the nuclear explosion would carryover to the atmosphere, resulting in the entire atmosphere of earth catching fire. Detailed studies were undertaken, and scientists assured decision makers that chances of this happening were negligible.
We got lucky that one time. Will our luck hold out in future as well?
