Sir: Firefighters rushing to a burning skyscraper dressed as clowns would not only be inappropriate but would also cast deep shadows on the expertise and seriousness of the fire department. Every single section of society has its own vital function to fulfil. And every uniform, every working dress has its own sanctity, its own function and for that matter, its own requirements.
As far as I know, military officers are strictly prohibited from going shopping to Sunday bazaars, ride tongas, or run private errands while in uniform. What a tragedy then that the supreme commander of the armed forces of Pakistan has no qualms about degrading the uniform so brazenly. It is comical to see the army chief addressing a public rally in Gujrat wearing his SSG jacket and praising his devious cohorts. The amount of public funds squandered on such activities is anybody’s guess. By any standard, it is treason to abuse the uniform in this manner for purely personal purposes.
I am pretty doubtful that the Pakistan Military Academy confers officers’ uniforms to graduating cadets for one day making a mockery of the sacred trust the nation repose in the officers’ corps of its defence forces.
