Today, the Christian community in Pakistan lost its most illustrious serving member at the hands of violence. Derek was an economist of repute and once considered to be the finance minister of Pakistan. In 1999, he was sworn as the minister of culture and minority affairs. In 2000, he resigned from the cabinet as a protest against not granting minorities the right to joint electorate. He later joined National Bank of Pakistan where he was serving as a senior vice president. Born in Lahore, he was the nephew of the renowned scholar Eric Cyprian.
On saturaday, he had gone to a bank in defence Lahore, where he was kidnapped. His dead body was found today near Manga a suburb of Lahore, brutally murdered and decomposing.
A die hard Pakistani,he always believed in the politics of mainstream. Perhaps that was also his undoing?
May God Bless Him and may his Soul Rest in Peace.
