I have identified myself as an Economics student for as long as I can remember. I like the way Economics and economists (sometimes) reason.I am doing a graduate degree in public policy but still I do manage to take a couple of economics courses every semester along with political science, sociology and other social science courses. I enjoy bringing economics together with political science. Mainly because there is a lot of space to create such combinations. As my professor would say there are a lot of 100 dollar notes on the floor.

This semester, however, I got stuck with a political science professor who does not care much about economics reasoning. Every now and then when I speak in class, he and a couple of my class fellows look at me as if I am talking nonsense. They wait for me to shut up so that they can go ahead with whatever crap they were discussing. I seriously think every social science can gain a lot if they start thinking a little like economists...not completely but a little. So after that one comment I realized I have done enough damage for today and kept my mouth shut for the rest of the while.

After the class, a classfellow of mine came up to me and asked what kind of economics had I done in my masters and bachelors? I dont know if I should tell my undergrad professors about this comment or not. I am assuming they may get hurt or angry at me for absorbing whatever kind of economics that guy meant. I, on the other hand, feel quite proud of the comment.

For the next class, I will prepare some banal comments about some banal political event. I am thinking of cutting down my very ’innovative’ comments to every other class. (I make little notes on the margins of my notebooks though; papers that I am going to write when all the order-taking from the professors is over). The professor already vetoed the topic that I wanted to research on for his class. I am quite sure he will not agree to be on my research committee either.

This is how life goes. Tommorrow, I have to work on GIS software (spatial econometrics software), the endeavor that I have taken to earn some money. I am completely uninterested in the project but I work on it 20 hours a week so that I can pay my rent.
