This refers to the Government’s proposal to reserve 27 per cent of seats for Other Backward Classes in Central institutions including IITs and IIMs.Any proposal towards enhancement of backward classes should be driven by common-sense and not by any ideology. While it may be unfair to thwart any steps taken towards the progress of such brilliant minds, mindless reservations in the higher educational institutions should be checked. Alternatively high priority should be given to their education at primary and secondary levels; all discriminatory provisions of the constitution with regards to religions should be removed. The same provisions should govern educational and religious institutions irrespective of whether the institution belongs to a religious majority or minority.
The idea is to create social harmony and improve general social welfare without causing any disruption to the engines of economic growth. They will most likely meet the resistance of religious extremists and fundamentalists but the these risks are worth taking.
