Throughout human history man has searched for god(s). When he couldn’t find him/them, he created his own, then he developed rituals and observed all sorts of sacrifices, mostly in human form, in order to appease the god(s) of his own making. But when a god seems to reveal himself thorugh some channel, man turns his back and denies his existence. Perhaps it’s the overpowering instinct of the man; a god who reveals himself would inevitably ask for submission, while man wants his god to succumb to the sacrifices that he has chosen for him, or he’d walk away.
Human being just cannot concede his complete authority, not even to his dieties.
