Indian Democracy

Posted: Dec 21, 2006 Thu 01:06 am     Views: 58

The other day I was having a discussion with Yasser on Indian Democracy. Though we did not complete the discussion, it was interesting to note that he is disillusioned with Indian Democracy only because of what he has seen of India and Indians on chowk.

If Indians on chowk represented Indian Democracy, then God save the world!!! Just as Pakistanis on chowk do not represent Pakistan, Indians on chowk do not represent India.

Coming to democracy, the first and foremost thing required in any democracy is strong democratic institutions. In India, strong democratic institutions are functioning like the Election Commission, Independant Judiciary, Written constitution, Parliament, ministries, a sitting opposition and most importantly a free and vibrant media.

Given the size and diversity of India, it is not easy to run this country. The very fact that this country has survived since 1947 and today is emerging out of its shell to become the next economic powerhouse speaks volumes of this country that thrives despite the diversity.

Given the population of India, it is not a surprise that there are some unhappy people. Corruption is another of India’s major problems. However, corruption is a gift of the planned economy era and it will not go away so soon. So for the time being, Indians have learnt to live with it.

Another very important aspect of any democracy is the right of the people to choose their government and replace it if they are not happy with its performance. We saw this right being utilised by Indian citizens when they decided to replace the former NDA govt. with the present UPA govt. Elections are held every 5 years and each and every citizen of India has the right and the responsibility to cast his / her ballot.

India is not a perfect democracy, but we have been a democracy only for the last 60 years. Steps like the Right to Information Act will only help in making our democracy stronger and more transparent. Thanks to the media, those days when the rich and famous could get away with murder are gone. The Jessica Lall case proves that point.

While there are some pockets like P and Bihar that need a lot attention and improvement, I am sure that with time these states will fall in line too.

Overall I think that Indian democracy can and should be emullated by Pakistan. If Indian with all its complexities and diversities can survive and thrive, there is no reason why this system cannot work for the Pakistanis, given that religion may not be such a major factor there.

Rgds,

Devkant.
