'Tragic' and 'horrific' are terms of understatement with regard to this story. Part of the justification for Mother Theresa's 'fast-track' to sainthood despite her appallingly blinkered view of suffering as contributing to some sort of 'spiritual ennoblement' (and therefore not REALLY that bad!) is that she was a simple, unsophisticated soul, but nevertheless totally sincere. I think she probably was indeed sincere, but so does Blair claim to be vis-a-vis Iraq, but that doesn't mean that he was right. The continuing tragedy is that the name of Mother T. already has considerable cachet, enabling those involved in such care homes to be considered with more respect and less examination than they have earned the right to, while the conferring of a sainthood on her will undoubtedly make it even more difficult to criticise anything done in an institution bearing her name. Sometimes one just wants to hold one's head in despair!
