Educated Middle Class

Posted: Oct 7, 2007 Sun 11:38 pm     Views: 259    Interacts: 0

I was having dinner with a bunch of guys. All hailing from different backgrounds but educated mainly from NED, LUMS, foreign schools, FAST etc.

Talking to them, I realized the problem in our middle class or the educated class.

Somehow they believe by virtue of their education, they are superior to common man or the illiterate person. This superiority does not arrive from honesty, wisdom, better work ethic. Its there just because they have degrees from good schools.

Since the topic of discussion was democracy, what else in current times, they were appalled that their vote carries the same weight to the semi-literate person serving us food or the illiterate person sweeping their houses.

How could such illiterate person know whats good for them? How would he know what political parties stand for? What sort of foreign policy should we have? He must only be worried about putting food on his table.

Exactly! Thats what he should worry about. If someone can ensure putting food on his table, giving him opportunities to grow, he should vote for him. Its not his concern what is the foreign policy.

By the way, I asked these educated and literate about our foreign policy, environmental policy, etc and they knew nothing about it. Most of them haven't even voted in elections.

A discourse on democracy could be too long for this blog, but I know what should be the first step towards a more democratic Pakistan. Assign weights to votes with the educated having half the weights of illiterates. Going by what I have seen among the literates, there will be some protests on blogs but thats what most an educated person would do. Protesting on streets for his rights is below him. An educated person usually does not stand in line and vote so why even assign half a weight to him.
