HP Amonst Chowkies in Pindi

Posted: Feb 17, 2008 Sun 09:55 pm     Views: 298    Interacts: 0

I looked forward to meeting him. YLH established contact and we set PC Rawalpindi as the rendezvous for the rather rowdy meeting we expected.

HP must have realized the true face of consumerism in Pakistan when he took the Murree Road and reached an hour late. Ayesha, YLH and my daughter all chowkies arrived even later travelling from Islamabad. I had a long wait at Tai Pan puffing and listening to Ghazals of Faiz on the projection TV, the day being Faiz's Anniversary.

I expected to meet a lean, mean and matter of fact HP. When he arrived, he was a bubbling, gross and smiling individual with a great sense of humor. The session was to last over high tea but moved late into the night. Soon Chowks L’infant Terrible Agha Amin Hamayun also arrived. I saw him after 15 years. Over grown hair and beard, he looked every bit a Taliban dressed in a surge blazer and trousers. The drifter in him has taken over the smart immaculately dressed young man that he was.

I was a lovely session with HP most of the time educating us on the not so visible aspects of politics. When we parted past mid night, he was the undisputed leader.
