Thats right! Its now being renamed Benazir Bhutto International Airport.
Name changes galore!
- Rawalpindi General Hospital renamed Benazir Bhutto Particular Hospital
- The famed Murree Road renamed Benazir Bhutto Road
- Pakistan renamed Bhuttostan (just kidding!)
Now BB was arguably the most corrupt leader in the history of Pakistan. And it wasnt just the giant corruption of $1.5 billion for which she and her husband were convicted, it was also the petty theft of national treasure from museums so their palace in UK could be adorned. The fact that she was a thief cannot be changed by the unfortunate incident of her being gunned down.
I had proposed a more deserving name for the Islamabad International Airport. I had suggested that it be named Mullah Omar International Airport. And here is why:
While Bhutto is credited with taking billions from Pakistani treasury, it were Mullah Omar's actions that resulted in the influx of billions of dollars of american aid into Pakistani treasury. It were his actions that resulted in western countries lowering tarrifs on textile and other exports from Pakistan, thus boosting our economy. The foreign reserves of Pakistan which had shrunk to a few hundred million dollars before 9/11, rose to more than $10 billion since then, thanks to Mullah Omar's decision to not handover Bin Laden.
Yes, its not politically correct to name an airport after Mullah Omar. But Mullah Omar did more for Pakistan than BB.
Now is the time to give credit where it is due!

Shame on us.
Sure, she may have looted the country, just like those before her, but she did come back and she did face the crowds, she did stand in front of the bullet-proof enclosure (unlike our 'commando' president) and she did stand out of the jeep to lift the spirits of the 'jiyaley'. She did go to gaoths (villages) and sit down with sweaty, smelly women and take their fly-covered, disease-ridden children in her laps and played with them. Not like that Shaukat Aziz, who remained in the boardroom, taking pensions from the poor and handing out wads of cash to his millionaire friends. And now having broken the bank, he's off to greener pastures.
Yeah, BB might have taken a few dollars, but she had qualities of a leader. The ability to lead, motivate, give vision and faith to the hopeless masses. Whatever energy Pakistan has today, it's thanks to BB's (much maligned) IPP deals 15 odd years ago. You can't bottle this, or go buy it in a store. A leader (good or bad), is something we in Pakistan, have stopped growing, like everything else.
that 'in' should confirm Shahadat not in an accident; not simply being hit by a Khota rairi by surprise...
