Recently a friend of mine broke up with her fiance. It occurred on Sunday morning. By Sunday evening her Facebook "relationship" status had changed from "Engaged to Faraz" to being "Single".
But that is not all. Since they were no longer linked to each other via "relationship" status, the Facebook application generated an auto-message on the home tab that stated "Haya and Faraz ended their relationship", with an appropriate broken heart icon next to it. Furthermore, she updated her facebook daily status by calling Faraz a "lowlife" and expressing her relief that it had happened sooner rather than later. Additionally, both Haya and Faraz took the next natural step by expelling each other from their respective "friends" list. She removed pictures from her albums where they were seen together. She also used Facebook's convenient "comments management" functionality by deleting all his comments from her profile. With all traces of this relationship gone, she then moved to assure her concerned friends about her emotional status in the wake of this breakup - she used one of Facebook's applications that lets you put a wiiiidely smiling smilie to convey this message: "Haya is feeling happy!"
And so there you have it! This e-breakup was so smooth and efficient in execution that I felt like breaking up just to try it out on Facebook. It did not require any paperwork. It did not require any trips to her place to offer support (gas is nearing $5/gallon!). It did not require her making any calls to her friends or writing any "everything-happens-for-good-reason" kinda long and boring emails. It was as easy as clicks of a few buttons.
For the record, here is my Facebook status update for today: Atif thinks that the best part of waking up is NOT Folgers in your cup. Rather, its the morning erection.
