Mumbai: The long-standing demand of policemen to raise the funds for cremating unclaimed bodies has been accepted by the home department.
The government has decided to grant Rs 800 for the disposal of each body. It had earlier sanctioned a mere Rs 8.
Replying to a query by Congress MLC Alka Desai, minister of state for home Siddharam Mhetre said the government hiked the rate recently. Desai said policemen often spent from their pockets to cremate unclaimed bodies. “It is difficult to cremate a person with Rs 8,’’ she said.
Mhetre said the Mumbai police commissionerate had recommended Rs 500 per case while the DGP suggested a sum of Rs 1,500.
