The ROZ idea was good but now it’s too late. We accept the premises that the US economy is tied to oil, so some investment in this area would be good.
As Ijaz wrote, the whole thing is completely botched up and now not even the US knows what its policies are in the area.
The US does have strategic interests in the area and the Middle East and the next President will have to work double overtime to retrieve the situation in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Iraqi PM’s slap on the Bush admin’s face has hurt this admin big time and I don’t see how this administration can recover from it. I think now the US admin does not even have the will to follow through on any programs in FATA, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Sending more troops without any long term planning would really mean letting the US troops held hostage in alien environments. This Afghanistan thing might bleed the US indefinitely.
I am of the view that the US should continue to press the Pak army to move in the FATA. The Pak army would attempt to wiggle out of the situation but Bush and Obama should force the Pak army to send more troops in FATA.
This will serve two purposes: 1. will cause a rift in the Pak army and the schism between the officers in the army would increase and they might fight with each other.
2. If the army is hurt in FATA by the Taliban or weakened by an internal fight or due to a small scale shootout between the officers, the civilians will get the opportunity to control the country.
The Pak army has damaged Pakistan immensely and now is the time to plot revenge. Pakistani politicians are kaath kay ullo but if they are pressed enough, they might act and people of Pakistan might just be able to break up the army.
The Indians need to increase pressure, the US needs to increase pressure and the afghan and even Taliban need to increase pressure on the army and break its back. With all their help, Pakistani people might just save Pakistan from the Pak army.
