Explosives in Marriot Blast

Posted: Oct 8, 2008 Wed 11:15 am     Views: 317    Interacts: 0

I sat with some explosive experts and calculated.
Because the crater was 65' in diameter and 55' in depth, calculations were made based on a Pressure Charge. This means that most of the blast wave moves in the direction of the crater. The explosive needed to create such a crater on partially muddy and partially stony soil was about 4000KGs of TNT, 3000KG of Plastic Explosive or 1500KG of RDX. This calculation is based on the yield of each explosive.
The truck body had a stand off of 5feet from the ground Zero, implying there was no tampering. Tampering means the compaction of the explosive to the surface against which it leans. Therefore the explosive can be increased by a factor of 1.5 meaning that it needed 2500Kgs of RDX and much more plastic or TNT to cause such a crater.
RDX is used by ordinance factories in detonators and detonating cords as a precursor to TNT/Plastic explosives. Normally military does not use RDX. It is made in Pakistan by Wah Noble.
