Just saw an episode of Capital Talk Jan22,2009 on www.pkpolitics.com where the debate was on ‘culture’. One thing is obvious that even if public is not aware of any technical definiton of the term ‘culture’, they do know one thing for sure that pakistani culture is nothing but a state of conflictions and contradictions. I strongly believe that Tolerance is a virtue that needs to be well knit in any society to enusre and promote its culture.Culture is not a single thing, aspect or emotion of life nor is it just politics, society or religion. Its a combination of all thesse things and therfore needs a society that is tolerating and can can at least accept other points of views if not readily assimilate them. Another important fact is that Pakistan has all shades of life in it ...and therfore pakistani culture needs to balance itself between modernity and modesty. So role of pakistani media becomes extremely important and yes if state patronizes Art it can and will do good. I would like to add that “Art is not something to be feared and treated as some illegitimate child .People are aware of good art and even if this talk show it is clear that they are well capable of differentiating ‘vulgar’as ‘not-art’ may it be in theatre ,films or drama. Prople need good quality of Art__ it can be achieved without unecessary touch of’ western culture’ or without showing a ‘kalashankoof culture’.Pakistani culture has a alot to offer and much to communicate through its media!

Thinking about ‘culture’ in terms of mutual tolerance and ability to cooperate with each other, we can see that we can hardly call ourselves CULTIVATED as is obvious from our political, economic and moral scene. However, tt does not negate the fact that there are finest human being, and millions of them, in Pakistan and of Pakistani origin (I being one of them – ha ha). But the point is that collectively we are not truly ‘cultivated’. The Collective cultivation in a society most often manifests itself in the form of art, literature and politics. In what state we are in all these three areas? And Why? What so called 'Pakistani Culture' can possibly offer?"
That is a burning question and a huge subject. But I do invite the readers to throw some ideas as it is most relevant topic. Thank you Macbeth for bringing this up.
