Gay Pride Takes Violent Turn in Pub

Posted: Feb 20, 2009 Fri 06:11 am     Views: 577    Interacts: 15

Militant homosexuals attacked a pub in Mangalore last week, thrashing courting heterosexuals in a bid to bring attention to the plight of sexual minorities in India.

Witnesses say that the activists, in a fit of misogynistic rage, primarily vented their ire on the women, thrashing them mercilessly.

The leader of the group, Pramod Muthalik, confirmed that his men had indeed committed the deed. “We did it to protect Indian culture. Throughout our history we have celebrated homosexual love but look at India today. So we decided to give the heteros a taste of their own medicine and to remind India not to ape the west.

India has several laws, enacted primarily by the British, making homosexuality a crime including the infamous Section 377. This act of violence against heterosexuals is seen by social scientists as a means of protests against the oppression faced by the LGBT community in India. It is even being spoken of in LGBT circles as India’s Stonewall.

Muthalik has vowed to wipe out this “curse of heterosexuality from the country guaranteeing to remove contact between the two sexes which lead to such “unnatural and unIndian feelings. He warned of severe consequence for any contact between the sexes, including mixed doubles Tennis matches. “A boy and a girl hitting balls in front of everybody is not good, said Muthalik sternly.

Rahul,

My intention here was to bring into contrast that the tolerance that India once had for the non-mainstream (in this case the sexual minorities) and compare it to the country's sorry state today.

Of course, there might be many ways to look at the article, so your view and critisism is quite valid.

Cheers,
Shoaib

That's a way of looking at it that I didn't consider, rahul.

" just that he is questioning the different attitudes of society towards violent straight intolerant men and violent gay people."
No.Shoaib can correct me if I am wrong, but what he is doing here is trying to make fun of the Ram Sena by portraying them as homosexuals. If he had really been trying to question the attitude of the society towards "violent gay people",the following line would not have been so ridiculous-he would have given the "violent gay people" an arguable cause.
"Muthalik has vowed to wipe out this “curse of heterosexuality from the country guaranteeing to remove contact between the two sexes which lead to such “unnatural and unIndian feelings."

Shoaib - thanks for the clarification. Much relief all round here - or at least for me, though I shouldn't be too surprised if a similar incident were eventually to actually occur, given that in certain regions there is intolerable mental pressure to 'conform'. Of course I fervently hope it wouldn't.

@Nb- I couldn't...the Chowk iLog interface doen't give me that option, or I couldn't find it.

@Khaki-it is a spoof. The Ram Sena is no LGBT rights group.

@Rahul-That was not my intention—if my writing could not convey that, then I apologise.

Thanks to those who like it.

Khakiflash, it is a spoof. The writer is able to defend himself, but he's pointing out that both these groups, real and fictional, are behaving violently in a situation that is not their business.
Rahul, I don't think this is a sign that he has internalised the prejudice against gay people, just that he is questioning the different attitudes of society towards violent straight intolerant men and violent gay people.

Its interesting how you,who probably thinks of himself as a liberal, has internalized the prejudice against homosexuals.
Its also interesting how khakiflash, a homosexual, thinks its offensive if its NOT a spoof.

Violence in any way by anyone should be condemned and not applauded...this is what I think. Declaring oneself ‘secular’ or ‘liberal’ is easy but to practice it needs guts, high level of tolerance, respect for others rights and sensitive heart.

The more the chants of ‘tolerance’, ‘human rights’, ‘freedom of expression’ are escalating, sadly more of ‘violence’, ‘discrimination’ and ‘Prejudices’ we are witnessing day by day.

I'm going to be the first to register my horror at this story - assuming it's not a spoof. (It IS for real, isn't it?) I don't see anything to celebrate or laugh at in entirely innocent people being injured or made to suffer. Take it out on those who frame or perpetuate unfair and discriminatory laws, yes, but not on those who do not participate in such. I'm assuming, of course, that this Mangalore pub was not exclusively for active, violently-campaigning homophobes.
