'Meethi Lassi'

Posted: May 24, 2009 Sun 10:16 am     Views: 536    Interacts: 15

For years, they sounded synonymous. Gawalmandi and ‘Meethi Lassi’. The very thought, ring or just the buzz of the word in my mind would make me drool_ A learned behaviour associating the drink with its best perceived source that triggered an instantaneous mouth watering reaction. (Rings a bell. Reminds me of an experiment and a task ably achieved by an accomplished scientist centuries ago to prove his point, but it was neither lassi as a motivator nor curious human beings as his samples that ended up in common resulting denominator)

Barring that discussion, the phenomenon continued implicitly and would have carried on indefinitely had it not been for this morning. Thanks to my ‘khala’ again who proved kind enough to have arranged a sort of family get together at her place for some inconceivable stupid happening. Anyways! The home made ‘meethi lassi’ served with the brunch, both supplementing and complementing delicious halwa puree, was mind-blowing to the extent that it seriously jolted the vanity and the framework of my rigid assumptions underpinning the predefined notion. The fleeting moment was enough to instill the realization that there unexpectedly had cropped up a stern challenger posing threat to the formidable monopoly enjoyed by Gawalmandi in the particular niche or domain.

While it seems to have been amicably or rather benignly settled, there is a lot to devour in life. Let’s not forget the soaring mercury levels and sweltering heat. What invariably accompanies this scorching spell is the supply of heaps of fresh pulpy mangoes and an equally intense craving. With plenty of season to follow and people and friends firmly placed in Multan and Muzaffargarh, a few selfless and others expecting some favours, with a bit of optimism, there is ample evidence to forecast a delivery of at least a few crates of juicy mangoes in short to medium term. The day they are going to land at my doorstep and I am able to lay my hands on them, all indicators, probabilities, temptations and routes will point towards canal bank, mangoes and ‘kuchee lassi.’

See you there. Pretty soon!!!!

Fouz if you can get hold of ricotta in pakistan, try that in lassi ..tastes better than the cream cheese you are mixing in it..!!!

Thanks Del. Correct! One can even taste metal with Lassi. How can I forget our traditional “matti ka piyala? They play major role in exceeding weight limit of my luggage.

I have collection from places called “driver hotel and “pathan hotel, can share if you write about doodh patti or peshawri kehwa.

For dhood lovers:
If you know someone at McDonald’s (in Pakistan), try the condensed milk they use for milk shakes. You will love it too.

I skipped my meal alright. It was heavy, nothing like the blender made concoction I was used to in Karachi. Some how the doodh of majhs in Lahore is more gaarha and malai-inducing.

By the way fellows, ever try a lassi with cheese? I blend two cubes of Happy Cow (or whatever brand you can get your hands onto) with not much sugar. Heavenly. A little salty taste with that gaarha doodh/dahi feeling....Mmmmmmm. I love wiping the doodh ki moonchhain afterwards :p

If I understand correctly the term extent of 'lassitude'? I did sleep like a dead man for a couple of hours, snoring to my heart's content lending life to the world around me. Do I get you right ?

Awesome collection! Simply amazing!

Very pertinent. The choice of vessel or (pandaa) is part and parcel.Nothing like the monstrous and dented cast iron glass with sharp edges or a humungous heavy stainless steel one when it comes to relishing lassi. So much for the metallurgy.

Same goes for the tea.If you appreciate a big 'matti ka piyala' instead of a teacup? Your amazing collection gives the inkling that you do ?

And that wonderful choice of name.3 sisters!

There is a beautiful hilly trail that runs from 'Ghora Galli' to 'Murree' bisecting amazing pine covered peaks on the way collectively known as '7 sisters'. Less than a day's effort and something really worth seeing and enjoying if you have a day to spare.

And finally how do you manage to attach that link in the webpage and make it appear bold or clickable ? Do you mind sharing ?

Yummy!!!Chatti ki lassi! The best one I ever tasted was in Faisalabad. With 'dahi' churned up.Right?

Fouz

And then for how long did it take to 'absorb' that thing and for how long did you have to belch, doze or sleep :) ?

ext-a-see

Good for you :)

I went to Lahore in search, inter-alia, of a pairon waali lassi . Always heard of it, never tasted. Down in the entrails of Bhaaati, on one cool sunday morning, I was able to get hold of the monster. In a glass that will make a jug look comparable, I ate that lussi; okay the first half of the glass was something like big mouthfuls of gulping. And then I was handed over a chamcha to scrape out the pairas and eat them. Which I did for the next three minutes.

The account of the cool relish of the 'meethi lassi', and not containing the extent of the 'lassitude' induced by it? :)
A very refreshing write up (makes me nostalgic though)
