If any one has ever wondered about the nihilistic nature of American wars and their their totality of destruction, one only needs to look no further than war known as the French-Indian Wars or what the Europeans called as the Seven Years War. The arrival of the white settlers on to the North American shores and their expansion for the land, convinced them their existence was incompatible with that of the Indians and that they could not co-exist together.
This war would influence and guide all the following American wars and so, when the Americans fight; they fight with a totality of effort that convinces them of the right of their cause and of the wrongness of their opponents cause. The process of industrialization and the advancement in armaments have only added more lethality to this believe and has allowed the Americans to wage a more total war.
If there are doubters, I would suggest please read the Treaty of Paris of 1763 and read the harsh terms in the treaty demanded by the American colonies, on the Indians, which even the British goverment was not willing to include in the treaty. Only in hopes of avoiding a conflict over the issue did the British include the terms in the treaty and instead of peace with their American colonies; they ended with the Declaration of Independence.
Irony!
