Orangi and Dharavi

Posted: Sep 7, 2009 Mon 11:11 am     Views: 215    Interacts: 2

There is a good thing about patriotic Indians. They are embarassed of the poverty and would like to hide the poor instead of alleviating their sufferings.
Some Pakistanis on the other hand could deny the existence of poverty altogether. Both Indians and Pakistanis love the privelege of exploiting their poor.
Orangi has been called a slum after 35 years but it started as a 'kutchi abadi'(temporary huts). It consists of an area larger than 25 square miles with a population over 2 million currently. Way more populated than Indian media's trumpeting news about Orangi being the largest slum in Asia or the whole world. People do not sleep on side-walks of Orangi because there are no side-walks. Hutments grew into single or two storey houses over the years and a large number of schools have been running successfully sending the poorest into the best educational institutions of the city. City had to build couple of roads to provide access to these people. A hospital was built in Orangi in the 90s. The people of Orangi have survived and thrived without much help from the government. They built sewerage system on self-help basis. Orangi pilot project(NGO) has been admired for its work with urban poor.
Dharavi is a slum in Mumbai which has been there pre-independence. Its area is reported to be 0.67 square miles. The news in the Indian media about Orangi being the largest slum bases itself on the comparison of population numbers not on their quality of residence. About 1 million people are crammed in this small area of Mumbai. Dharavi could be comparable to Lyari in Karachi as a old-city slum. Lyari could be as dirty and hazardous for health as Dharavi because industrial waste flows through open sewers.

Thanks for sharing this info.

I greatly admire Akhtar Hamid Khan, a pioneer in microfinacing who started the Comilla Project and got Mohamad Yunus involved in it, that led to the founding of Grameen Bank.

Then, after the fall of Dhaka, Dr. Khan moved to Karachi and started Orangi Pilot Project to help the refugees from East Pakistan settle in Karachi.

Dr. Khan was the force behind Orangi Pilot Project to help residents of Orangi Town, a katchi abadi (shanty town) in Karachi to help themselves. It has helped in a number of projects to build better low-cost housing, improve sanitation and establish schools with the participation of the community. “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Acclaimed social scientist Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan used to reference this well-known proverb (according to his son, Akbar Khan), as it quite fittingly represents his philosophy on community development.

Dr. Khan's example is truly inspirational for all Pakistanis whose life should be celebrated by all Pakistanis.
