Language of Religion

Posted: Oct 6, 2009 Tue 06:40 pm     Views: 184    Interacts: 7

I have been contemplating on the relationship between Language and Religion for quite a while. I have not just read on the subject, I have also experienced their interplay throughout my life in various cultures, in various parts of the world. I am convinced that religions evolve as an attempt to meet a society's needs or they are created to meet the needs of the ruling class. A society may need a social, moral or judicial reform or it may require a spiritual pathway...religions have evolved to address all of them. In case of a manufactured religion, the audience are well defined and specific. Since their target is a specific society, religions most often take up the most effective language of that society as their medium of instruction. The language, then, defines the religion and the society which was targeted for the original reform/ manipualtion.
The idea that a language defines a religion is of key importance to my thesis. Societies, being organic in nature, are both complex and dynamic. If differential equations are found to be an effective way to determine the unknowns of a dynamic system, they may be used with the same effectiveness on another dynamic system with similar properties. However a religion, say which evolved for a moral reform of a society, may not necessarily be effective for another society in a similar moral dilemma.
Many religions claim to be 'universal'. Some religions claim to be mere 'philosophies' that can be applied in the private life of any individual or public life of any society to acheive the desired outcome as prescribed by that religion. However the fact remains that each religion is confined to the language in which it is prescribed and therefore the religion has the highest affect on the population that shares its language.

Ali also said "Less children means wealth". In any case quotes from people (and from Quran) depend on the situation under which they were spoken, out-of-context quotes can be dangerous.
btw are you commenting on my iLog or me? since Ali also said "don't look at who is saying, but what is being said" :)

"I believe that the root-cause of human misery in today's world is unruly population growth."

Husain sahib, you need to re-think because THEY have it in the plan to 'reduce' the population by whatever means possible. You can guess what THAT means!

The root cause is this:

'The poor don't get enough to eat because the rich waste too much.' (Ali ibn abi Talib)

I'm sure you know this very gentle man.

I forgot to add in the beginning 'Dear Mr Husain'.

"(even though I don't agree with the concept of praying) is childish in my opinion."

And this?

Dear Mr. Tahir: nowhere have I written that religion is confined to a society only less effective for other societies because it is confined to the LANGUAGE.
As for "God's Law for all times", that is a quagmire that is the biggest obstacle in the Islamic reform.
My observations are for religion in general, and not Islam alone. Take for example, Christianity. Since the original language of Jesus was Aramaic (an afro-asiatic lang.)you could argue that it should have least impact on the West. But when we look closely, Jesus never 'invented' Christianity, it was defined during Constantine's rule and given the garb of Latin. This made it possible for West to accept it because now it was closer to their culture.

Have you ever felt that your grasp about Islam is confined, Husain sahib? Get hold of a good English translation of the Qur'an before you start thinking that Allah only did the Arabs a favour.

You are playing on a weak wicket here and the atheist mob will gladly proclaim you emperor.

God's Law caters to everyone for all times to come.

PS:
Don't be afraid of the speaking the truth if you are new at this site. What the demeneted lot are upto over here is plain for all to see.
