AK 47 is the best

5.56 mm Calibre Fails in Afghanistan-AK 47 is the best- from Ravi Rikhye

Speaking of the AK-47 Complaints are pouring in from the Brits - and the Americans too, we believe - that the 5.56mm round fails to stop Taliban fighters. In one extreme case, a British soldier shot a fighter five times and the man did not have the politeness to drop.

This was baffling to us. we recall reading cases in Vietnam where Communist fighters shot in the elbow suffered such shock from the high velocity rounds they would drop dead.

Now, we are told, that problem Number 1 is that the current US bullets are made to penetrate body armor. The Taliban wear shirts, and bullets go right through them. If you don't hit a vital organ, the man gets to live. The bullets don't spatter if they don't hit armor and this is another problem. Someone else we talked to - who said they had no direct knowledge of what's happening in Afghanistan - suggested that if the 5.56mm is being fired from carbine length barrels (is the US M-16 replacement technically a carbine?) - the bullets do not have the velocity needed to offset the lighter load.

Something that's easy to understand is that soldiers are complain most firefights take place at 300+-meters and the lighter bullet is simply less lethal.

Then there's the grit issue. Afghanistan is nothing but fine dust and the modern guns jam.

(BTW, we are told 600-years ago Iran and Afghanistan were heavily forested but humans cut down all the trees.)

The solution to the above problem is simple. Forget all these expensive Western guns and set up a couple of AK-47/7.62mm factories.

Further BTW WashPo says Americans purchased 12-billion rounds of ammunition last year, 38 per capita. Ammunition price has trebled. Apparently fears that Mr. Obama will take away our guns or make ammunition impossible to get are fuelling this run. People are buying ammo for guns they don't yet own, but might some day.

Meanwhile, not be grumpy, what about those of us who don't have money to buy decent quality firearms? And they call America a free country? Don't we need a Government subsidy too? First gun free, second 75% off, third 50% off, fourth 25% off, fifth you have to pay for yourself.

No need for applause: this is Editor's contribution to America's search for solutions to its many problems.

... and they still use soyuz, which is way way cheaper then launching a shuttle & when the shuttle fleet is grounded in 2010, US will be using soyuz as well.
