Faces

The rain fell.

And the rain fell.

The wipers were going full speed. Cold, cold fog hugged the interior. It was difficult to see the road ahead. As it was, it was getting almost dark.

I looked in the rear view mirror. No, there was nobody behind me. But I still felt as if I were being followed. It is not a good feeling to be followed. Especially if you have no clue what is behind you.

Or up front!

I was nine hundred miles from home. But it does not matter too much where you are at a given moment, for you are mostly where you always were.

The eighteen-wheeler is immune to the vagaries of nature – except when it snows too much. Then all you can do is pull over, preferably near a place where you get eats. If not, then you just dig into your own provisions.

“John, you got to get hold of yourself!”

“I could do a better job of it if you were not always breathing down my neck!”

I wanted to turn suddenly and face my tormentor – but I was afraid. What if I turn back to look and there is nobody there? I don’t like to look into nothingness.

I looked in the rear view mirror. No, there was nobody behind me. But some of those creatures cannot be seen in mirrors. But they are there all the same – take my word for it!

The faceless faces that make one’s days- and sometimes the nights! Like vampires, they will suck your lifeblood out of you, except, unlike vampires, they are very real!

The toll-booth lady handed me my change and the receipt. “Thank you, Mr. Balab!” The light turned green. It was time to move ahead. I wondered what bed I will be sleeping in tonight.

I hate bugs. They crawl up on you when you are most vulnerable.
