iRant - The agony of knowing better

Posted: Nov 22, 2009 Sun 03:39 am     Views: 175    Interacts: 0

Welcome to my latest rant. I hear and read a lot of people making some very basic mistakes that leave a humorous yet negative impression of them on me. This should not be confused with judging or me being snooty since a few of my closest friends are guilty of these and still get a phone call from me once in a while.

I am hoping and trying in my own capacity to help as many people as possible by my iLogs and Facebook notes of this nature. Please pitch in your two cents and share with your friends, co-workers and family (We all know a 'lolzer' or two).

A few examples are:

'lolz' or 'lols': It's L.O.L. or 'LOL' - Laugh(ing/s) out loud. (Should only be used in text messages or internet chats, informal communication but never in formal/spoken conversation).

'Thanks God!': Thank God!

'Please reply me': Please reply to my post/e-mail/etc or please reply.

'On/off the fan/light/computer/etc': Prefixing this phrase with 'switch' or 'turn' etc makes one appear less of an idiot. People that say things like 'Open/close' for most electronic equipment should consider switch on/off.

'Backside': Mostly used while giving out directions, use 'behind' instead, please?

'Mines': This is mine and that is mine. Not 'mines'.

'Miss call': You meant to say 'Missed call/Bell' but then, saying 'give me a missed call' would really pollute the tenses.

'Shoppers': Plastic bag, shopping bag, cellophane bag etc

I have no qualms about misspelled or mispronounced words as long as they're not uttered so as to sound or appear 'cool'. Some people just don't know any better and some people don't want to know.
