Malik Ghulam Mustafa Khar, former Governor & Cheif Minister of Punjab is an avid Bully Kutta Keeper
Soldier from the British Indian Army (1915) taking time to stroke a Staffordshire Bull Terrier type dog
On some Internet sites you will see pictures of our dogs, but we do not endorse their account of either the history or attempts at classification of the Bully Kutta Breed. The information you see on this site is by people who have kept Bully Kutta's in Pakistan
WHAT IS A BULLY KUTTA?
British Breeds, especially the Old English Mastiff, English Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and all kinds of hounds were exported to India in large numbers during the 18th and 19th Century, the first being two packs of Hounds in 1772.
The heavier dogs or what enthusiasts call true type Bully Kutta is a Mastiff, it has heavy Dewlap and has loose skin all over its body (see pictures below). These can range from 30 to 42 inches in height, and are easily recognisable by their thick bone structure and Mastiff appearence (see standard on www.unkc.comcoming soon)All Bully Kutta's have English Bull Terrier (Gull Terr) blood, they also have numerous other British Breeds in their make up including English Mastiffs, Pointers, Great Danes and all kind of British hunting dogs

Dog fighting & Bear Baiting in the South Asian Sub Continent started with the arrival of the British and their dogs. These Dogs were crossed with the locally available stock, the end result being called Bully Kutta by the native people. The word "Bully" nowadays is used for convienience, it does not mean Bulldog. The real word in urdu/hindi is Boh'li meaning heavily wrinkled.
Bully Kutta is a victim of history in todays Pakistan. Majority are pets or used as guard dogs. But a few find themselves in the hands of criminals and are used in illegal dog fighting. Authorities in Pakistan are clamping hard on this, and WSPA and PAWS are also playing a very active role
Males have a height of 30 to 42 inches at shoulder, while females are usaully 30 to 36 inches.
Given weight of a Bully Kutta as compared to other breeds is irrelevant. Bully Kutta's carry far less fat than most other large breeds, their weight comes from their massive bone and long lean muscles.
Temprament
Bully Kutta's in general have a very laid back temprament. Most tend to sleep all day. As pups and young adults they can be boistrous but calm down cosiderebly as they get older. Assured of their own prowess they have an almost Regal attitude towards other breeds. A bully kutta will rarely pick a fight with another breed and they routinely walk away from lesser dogs, even when challenged.
What ever a Bully Kutta does, it does for its owner. It will lay its life down protecting you or your property. It will fight to the end anything that threatens your well being.
If you are looking for a game dog, for any illegal purpose you will be severely disappointed with a BK. If you are;looking for a dog to do weight pulling or any other atheletic event, look elsewhere. BK's are unsuitable for any kind of Personal Protection training. They are lazy and stubborn and virtually untrainable.

Historical Rawalpindi
Majority of our Bully Kutta's have been acquired from the Historical City of Rawalpindi in the Pothowar Region of Northern Pakistan. A one time Headquarter of the Mighty British Northern Army, Pothowaris make up some 90% of the Pakistan Army. A Martial race, they are an honourable people, sharing values common to Punjabis on both sides of Pakistan India border.
Its no coincidence that Bully Kutta's in Pakistan today are concentrated in areas where British Army and Civilian authorities settled. From Rawalpindi in the North to Jhang & Multan in Southern Punjab. Kohat in Northwest Frontier province, again a centre of British Military activity has large number of the original English Bull Terriers called Gull Terr's.
