The unfortunate run of events continues. Arguably the best outfit in the world football (soccer) not today but for most of the last century stumbled on its way to the victory again.
This is unbelievable!
The quest continues, as the Olympic title remains elusive. Never in the history of the Olympics could Brazil achieve the ultimate glory and tonight, the dream shattered again. It did like it had so many times earlier. When on the rise, the star-studded disastrous blue and yellow tidal wave has the potential to sweep anything away that comes its way. But it would have to wait, at least another four years, before the magicians could realistically give themselves any chance of stylishly juggling their way to the top, still very much in pursuit of their maiden gold medal.
Pitted against the arch rivals, Argentina, and dominating the proceedings for most of the first half, seven minutes of lethargic play in the early second half and a bit of bad luck and indiscipline and it was all over for the five time world champs. One must give due credit to the winners who came out firing in the second half and seized the initiative away from the Brazilians after being subdued for most of the first half. They were clearly the better team during the second half and played like true champions. Two rebounds from the gold post and five bookings including two red cards (a total of fourteen in the last two games) did not help the Brazilian cause.
Now does the fortune really favour the brave?
The fast and furious Nigerians now await Argentines for the final show down. Not that the Africans are likely to prove any easy opposition but Argentina is looking for its second successive Olympic gold. If it coasts to victory again, Argentina would be repeating a feat that Hungary demonstrated more than forty years ago.
While I feel sorry for the Brazilians tonight, the day clearly belonged to the blue and white striped opposition who outplayed the former in most areas of the game. Let’s see how far can Dunga turn this squad around that now seems to have a complete knack of losing at various stages of Olympic football.
