Chowk Vs Facebook

Posted: Sep 12, 2009 Sat 11:06 am     Views: 395    Interacts: 20

I enjoy Chowk.

Its kind of a daily online mag with diverse opinions, ideas, view points and perspectives. Some I like, some I don't, nonetheless, it remains interesting; interesting for the healthy dose of diversity it offers to cater to different perspectives.

However, at times, the exchange of ideas and sharing of opinions begins to pose another looming question: Should chowk be treated as (Facebook)'? Is it becoming a (un)social networking site rather than a cyber crossroad of ideas alone? The reason for suspecting such an eventuality is the distasteful reality of interactors sometimes forgetting to notice that its the IDEA they are projecting or declining. The debates that should revolve around the strength of the idea and the validity of the logic, unfortunately, stoop below the intellectual plane by turning into a means of venting out personal likes and dislikes. Often a times, its a very logically stimulating article that prompts one to share an opinion, but the nature of the prevailing arguments on the interactors' page makes it disgraceful for one to join in the discussion. The profanity of language and the fickleness of thought, spear headed by the interactors hurling personal assaults on one another, become the show stopper.
The unfortunate noticeable point remains however, that its not the degree of strength that one holds in the validity of one's own argument but in the intellectual depravity of the other, that fuels the argument to keep on going. Such personal clashes become a rather sorry sight for someone who comes on board with numerous intellectually charged individuals, just to enrich one's mind with a bright idea for the day, if any.

Now, such personal clashes eventually give rise to 'camps': "Either you are with us, or against us!" This tendency, I believe, is extremely detrimental for flourishing healthy exchange of opinions. You see, I maybe very appreciative of what any certain interactor writes, but that does not mean that I subscribe to anything and everything that is presented by the same. And this, I believe, does not earn me the right to be stoned! Having said that, there are certain interactors whose writings I never fail to go through, simply because I enjoy what they write, and more importantly, I like HOW they write.

Now, coming to the thought that prompted this entire i-log: Should Chowk be taken as Facebook-not? I mean why do people get so itched up by their differences with another person (ALAS! not ideas again!) that they stoop so low that the profanity in interaction reaches newer depths hitherto unknown. I feel sorry and pitiful for individuals who so willingly take the insult of associating themselves with abusive identities and have nothing better to do than throwing up in cyber space all that a littered mind churns out.
Also, I think it is very unfortunate that when one can not come up with one's own argument to support what one has to say, one divulges into someone else's words to suit to one's own nefarious purposes.

Eliminating such attitudes, and interactors, who can not be identified in any way other than an abuse, can make Chowk a more enjoyable experience.

Very aptly written. A breath of fresh air amidst recent spate of sick, controversial and useless posts.

A very timely reminder. Thanks for coming up with this ilog.

Fouz, did you notice, I never targeted what you wrote. Because you too are a mature person and show respect to women and minorities.
We all can agree or disagree. But at least respect should have prevailed for women.
You show respect, Tahir does not.
Once again I am sorry to all whom i have offended (except Tahir and his "fans" who kept on coming with abuses in thin air!!!!!made me really laugh)

Devil's advocate. Hmmm. Love the idea though :p

Well leenah, I wanted to highlight issues but Mr Tahir was bent upon taking spotlight away from domestic violence against women in Ms Taji's article to vagina monologues and suitable replacment of v word with p word.
How do you argue with such people? What intellectual arguments can affect these people?
Just see the interact session of Ms Taji's article. Mr Tahir first used Islam to make his argument as to why women should be under men, dared ms Taji, then created a diversion to an i log where women were mocked through an indian song and then started giving first veiled references to female body and finally hurling open derogatory remarks about female body.
I have no regrets. I wanted to anger him and all his so called fans who lack the moral decency to oppose what their beloved writer writes. Yes argue can be made as to why i did not use my own ID, well i have given the reason for that
Funny thing was that every time, i have dared they have responded with abuses smply playing into my hands. While they were angry and yet trying to appear unfazed, I was having fun.
I am sorry to you sister. You are a good person. May Allah bless you

thanks for your caution. I had heard about 3rd party applications that have been given the right to display ones info and pictures in their promotional campaigns. To counter that please ensure that you have opted for 'NO ONE' at

I hope it gets through now! :/

For your sake, I would hope that the nature of interaction at the two is different too :P
This is the perfect feature that describes the difference between Facebook and (Facebook)'
where, I am sure you are aware, (facebook)' is the numerical way of saying facebook-not.

Thanks a lot! :)
Sad indeed, but then as they say, diyay say diya jalaatay chalain :)

Gosh! I wish I could sound a bit less cliche' :P

Thankyou for dropping by. The pleasure is mine. You see a part of learning is also 'never say Never!' :)
Hope to benefit from your views more often. Please keep contributing.

Nameless interactor
I am grateful for your opinion, about whose origin Im still clueless though. However, it would have been better if the real issues could have been addressed.

Fouz
I agree, its rather too much to expect. But then how would one enjoy the gala of ideas if not seeking to look for them? :)
Btw, yet another reference to UP reminded me of 'being devil's publicity officer' :P

Yaar yeh waisay dajjal waali baat dil ko lagti hay. Aur bhi bohat saaray logon ka yehi kehna hay.

Hmmmm
Posted by Urstruly on Saturday September 12, 2009 12:58 pm
Please stay away from such scams as Facebook. This is Dajjal's scheme of documenting every human being for upcoming wars. Of course he makes it alluring. But even if you don't believe in it, marketing companies are documenting you and they sepnd billions to do that.

leenah you should see UP. Its a different sleaze pool altogether, compared to which the masoomana tabadilayay khiyaalaat on FP is nothing. :)

I agree with your observation but who ever in the world would consider Chowk a serious intellectual pursuit? We are all here to have our voices registered as dead pixels on screen; to have our say read preferably by people who would, we can hope, be stimulated to interact in any way they may wish to. Doesnt that give us a sense of a readership, howsoever malignant at times? What author would shy away from that? :)

Chowk therefore is not Readers Digest Interactive (C). :)

Leenah, I wont try to justify as to why I assumed an abusive identity. But I had my reasons though those reasons may not be interpreted as justifications by you. When I did that I knew I was doing a wrong thing. But I wanted to give Mr. Tahir a taste of his medicine. You talk of moral and intellectual depravity, I think giving intellectual arguments to people like Tahir is futile. Frankly I have no respect for people who start with Islam and end up by discussing Vagina monologues and discuss openly about the suitable Punjabi equivalent to the word V. He deserved what he got. If I have shown moral depravity by answering him in his own language and acting like him-so be it. Tahir has abused women, made fun of female writers a number of time and targeted minorities again and again.
I could have answered him in my own sign in name. But I wanted to provoke him and yes act like him. Even my real sign in name for that matter does not give any clue as to who I am. But the only reason as to why I assumed another identity was because I wanted this thing to be temporary not permanent. Original sign in name would have just prolonged it because every time I would sign in, this needless argument would have erupted. My reasons were pragmatic. I did not want discussions on national politics and important social issues interrupted by this thing.
But to you I owe an apology. You are a very nice person and a good human. I should not have used your quote to score a point. You may “pity” me but it does not matter because I know that what I did was not what I normally do. After seeing derogatory remarks about women, I merely tried to stoop low and frankly have no regrets. If you think that I am morally deprived, Ok I am.

But even a “morally bankrupt” person like me does acknowledge that you are a good human and I should not have used your remarks. I am really sorry to you. And I wont argue in this interact with any subsequent remarks. So all “fans” of Tahir can post whatever they want to about me. At least here they will have a clear field. God bless you sister. You are a good human being.

I recently joined facebook, and although I have been a nominal chowk member, havent really started interacting till recently. I am shocked at the closed-mindedness of people both at chowk and on facebook. It seems people are convinced they are absolutely right with nothing to learn, and i had almost made up my mind not to bother going on either site again, when i saw this iLog:)
