This took place during the time when those infamous cartoons from Denmark had everybody upset. The government of Pakistan had also taken a stand on the issue and there were supposed to be official protests. I got to my office that day and started work as normal. At about 11am, cops had come around to everyone's offices and shops and asked them to close. They didn't bother to announce this strike a day before, they waited for everyone to get to their offices and start work before telling them that they had to shut down.
It was an interesting scene...I had read countless books on history, the media, the mob, and manipulation of the masses. I knew that the elites of our world had been using this kind of tactic (manipulation) for a long time, but I wanted to experiment and see for myself if I could do it too. I know it sounds totally twisted, but it happened so spontaneously and curiosity lead the way.
So my office is on a main road and I can see all the way up and down the street due to my position and large glass front. I noticed that since everyone had already shown up for work and they had been forced shut, they were all standing on the streets talking to one another about what just happened. It then dawned on me....what I was seeing in front of me were the masses. They had been driven out of their dwellings and herded into the street for anyone to take advantage of. This is where I came into the picture with my twisted experiment on manipulation of the masses.
It was very clear that this was agitation at a high level taking place. After all, with our history...why would any government be so stupid as to herd people together like this for anyone to come along and start giving speeches to incite them to do something crazy? No sir, this to me looked like it was organized.
I noticed that many people started grouping together to talk about what was happening and everyone seemed a little confused. I noticed that since they now had time and were chit chatting anyway, some of them started to get emotional about the cartoon issue.
Amy's the shop in Stadium Commercial was open and there were no issues in that area. I called one of my office boys into my room and told him to run to the local stationary store and get four large placards and a black marker. He quickly came back with my weapons...a piece of cardboard and a marker.
I wrote a message on each of the four placards....something to the affect, "Amy's sells Danish products, boycott Amy's". From the window of my office, I pointed out 6 men standing together on the street talking to one another. They fit the profile...they looked lower-lower middle class and were herded together on the street on this particular day. They could not see me, but I could see them. I told my office boy that he should walk past them with the placards showing the writing and pretend as if he was lost. They would then ask him what he was doing and where he was going and he would explain that he was going to protest the sale of Danish products. They asked if they could see the placards, which he had been instructed to hand over to them as soon as the opportunity presented itself. His instructions were to then wait for them to start talking about it intensely while he was supposed to disappear and come back to the office quietly.
He did exactly as he was told and I could see from my window that my cattle had taken the bait and were now raising those placards over their heads and marching down the street. WIthin 15 minutes, the crowd of 6 turned into a crowd of 50. ...joined by all the others who had been herded into the street by the circumstances. I didn't follow them down the street, obviously, but I saw the crowd keep getting larger as it started to reach Amys. After 30 minutes, we received news that Amys had been shut down.
As sick and twisted as this sounds, I did actually do this....it is not just a story. I wanted to experiment and see what these politicians and media people have been doing all along. This experience proved to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that the masses have historically been used and manipulated by the elites through actions like this throughout history. It also gave me a much greater appreciation for why the media cannot be allowed to just broadcast whatever the hell it wants, politicians must be closely scrutinized and brutalized if they do things like this, access to the public at large should be considered a national security issue in addition to a privilege...which is extended only out of the necessity of maintaining a democracy. But do not kid yourself, it comes with huge risks that we Pakistanis should have, but unfortunately have not yet learnt.

"....as a pompous red cheekd aristocrat in a tweed suit wearing stained underwear."
"ppl here just use strange sentences loaded with vocab they happened to pick up in a book.. and use it to impress."
You were saying something?
ppl here just use strange sentences loaded with vocab they happened to pick up in a book.. and use it to impress.
plus they can hardly stick to the debate but constantly bring in mullah's, mush, benazir and the politics in general into every interaction.
its a shame to see what we are made of.
substance ppl!
I, personally, don't trust the masses when their minds are already spinning with angst and frustration. It's not about the masses then - it's about human nature. It is continuously exploited. My point here was simply that you don't need to conduct these 'experiments' to answer your personal questions. It doesn't seem fair does it? Just because others do it (e.g. politicians etc) doesn't mean it's 'a-okay' for you to do the same.
This case in point isn't about democracy and freedom of speech. Let's not drag that in here. This is simply about knowing what's a safe 'experiment' and what's 'twisted'.
plus en plus your use of words such a 'lower lower middle class' ' cattle' make you come across as a pompous red cheekd aristocrat in a tweed suit wearing stained underwear.
"I do totally agree that in theory, a LOT of harm could come of such an experiment...but imagine how much harm has already come from those who were not experimenting and doing this to achieve some goal."
We don't need to imagine that harm. And we don't need people thinking they're Einstein either. It was just a reckless thing to do with no momentous point to prove.
The United States is totally hysterical and its public has been turned into a mob driven by fear and the news that they decide to feed them. Yes...they have not been able to do that to 100% of the population, but we are talking about the masses.
Do you remember them getting upset at the French for not supporting this fraudulent war and changing the name of French Fries to Freedom Fries? Did you not see people pouring their French alcohol into the gutters in the US? Have they not all become a bunch of stupid flag waivers just like Hitler's followers?
How long do you think it takes for a democracy to turn into a fascist state? The burning of the Reichstag lead to Hitler's rise as a dictator from an ordinary chancellor. September 11 turned American democracy into the new Roman Imperialist State of our times. Tony Blair was able to fool just enough people in his country to take them into the war with Iraq. Yes, he is hated for it and there are plenty who see through that...but he did achieve it didn't he?
I don't have any answers, just more questions that arise as a result of this experiment. I don't know how any genuine democracy can function in these circumstances....ever.
Please read up on crowd and mob theories.
People act differently when they act individually, vs when they are in a crowd. The crowd tunes down our ability to understand nuances and complexitites. The crowd becomes an entity that acts as one dumb mofo.
People acting individually in a collective manner (e.g. voting, or other civic stuff like "education" exams, etc, etc) act differently (more intelligent, individual responsibility etc).
Democracies should nt be run like mobs (big rallies etc). Voting should certianly not take place in a mob like environment.
Mobs are used by political parties to demonstrate strength and power (the ability to direct a numerically large force). However, you don't get the same issue when each individual is acting on thier own (e.g. people driving).
There is a lot of info on these subjects, and it is very interesting indeed.
"The masses are easily manipulated".
Yes. In fascist like states.
However, in many european states, the masses make very intelligent decisions ...as they make them individually...
It is possible to have a democracy where the media manipulation, or mob manipulation does not rule the day. If the office of the "Prime minister" is simply an administrative post that is rotated amongst all parliment members every few months, and the real power / decisions come from the parliment itself, then you can see the cult of personality fade into the distance. The craving for the chair move into the distance. It will be possible to make better decisions etc.
Having said that, I must confess that I have been arguing the opposite these days, that the current hysteria in Pakistan is ignoring some basic commen sense issues.
Although I did not feel even for one moment that the situation could have spun out of control since police where everywhere and they organized this herding, I do totally agree that in theory, a LOT of harm could come of such an experiment...but imagine how much harm has already come from those who were not experimenting and doing this to achieve some goal.
It also shows the essential flaw in democracy/capitalism, which is the assumption that people will be rational and capable of looking after their own interests. That is simply not true...the masses are far too easily manipulated, even by an inexperienced guy like me.
We got your ilog going

You have continued to babble on like a daddoo in the pond.
It is important to understand the world as it is, and as it could be, WITHOUT resorting to the same tactics. So your experiment, amigo, was cruel. Much harm could have come out of that.
If you must experiment further, do benign things with crowds instead...
Somethings, you don't have to "try" to know how they work. Catch the drift?
I have seen beyond your infantile bullshit
that was a real a-hole thing to do. So much for your democracy talk. Dude, you are just another a-hole crowding out the sun.
