Political situation in Pakistan both externally and internally is ominous. Election of Zardari as President and subsequent control of the nuclear button is a combined issue of concern. USA therefore wants to CO-OPT the COAS of Pakistan in a manner that he can exercise authority over Zardari in an opaque manner. For Pakistani thinkers in Civil Society, this is a very serious matter and ultimately will become the unkindest cut on the teetering democracy. Imagine a President who controls Pakistan’s biggest political party, controls all PPP public office holders by the hair, enjoys the same powers as Musharraf (as 17th amendment needs 2/3rd majority to repeal), has links with British and US establishments including their agencies and most; has Zalmay Khalilzad, an Afghan Pathan sympathetic to Northern Alliance as his personal advisor. This Zalmay, that I had mentioned earlier is a pseudo on the region and is accused for ruining America’s policy in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Zardari's corruption and erratic behaviour are now folklore.
I was called by this gathering of former envoys, bureaucrats, generals and other members of civil society like lawyers. doctors etc. to brief them on various contingencies.

would you mind elaborating a bit on Zalmay being "a pseudo on the region" and how he might have ruined America's policy in Iraq?
