Nude Worship Ban

State In India Seeks Nude Worship Ban!

Wednesday, 5 March 2003, 06:00 CST, source: Associated Press Strange News

Every year, tens of thousands of women gather at a Hindu temple in southern India and worship in the nude, despite efforts to stop them.

For 17 years, authorities and social reformers have tried to prevent the devotees from disrobing as they bathe in the Bhadra River and roll around the temple of the Hindu goddess Renukamba. And on Wednesday, officials said they have once again banned nudity during the temple fair from March 9-11 in the village of Chandragutti in Karnataka state.

Many of the devotees are young women who are performing an initiation rite to enter prostitution, while others are fulfilling vows they have made to the goddess.

Tushar Girinath, the deputy commissioner for the Shimoga district, said devotees can perform all the rituals, but they must remain clothed.

He has also ordered all liquor shops within a three-mile radius of the temple closed during the fair to keep people from becoming unruly.

In 1986, worshippers became angry at attempts to stop them. They stripped the police, journalists and the social activists and forced them to parade naked.

My Comments:

Islamophobes, please enlighten Muslims about this wonderful world of Disney called In-credible India! We are plain awe-stricken!

Those who never fail to whip up the frenzy about the alleged cruelty against women in Islamic countries, need to see their own faces in this broken mirror first.

Worshiping in nude is one of the important spiritual practices in which the person completely disposes himself and surrenders to the Goddess!!

This ban is a stupid way of trying to impose dhimmi values on hindus.

Those tying to imitate turning the fertile land of sindh and punjab into pathetic , desolate and barren Arabic sand lands would never succeed!!

The tormented, deep in the fiery pit, cannot advise those resting in the shade.

yaar Nem,

I do love your culture and its colours.
And I don't hate India in general; it's just that we you guys negate our culture and try to feel suprior about yours. My comment was in that context, nothing else.

I have problems with your policies n all, but I love your scriptures n stuff. So no hard feelings, ok?

"Yes, if you tell me it's only Indian, I will hate it for intinctual reasons."

The instant case is only a part of tribal culture and it would be wrong to give it a 'national' dimension. Having said that, it is not uncommon for foreigners to come to India with their cameras trained on the half dressed, pathetic looking beggers or fanciliy dressed snake charmers so that they can go back to their countries and say that India is a land of snake charmers. If they derive pleasure out of it, so be it.

What is sad is that such people do not seem to marvel the achievements of the country, the intermingling of cultures, unity in diversity and exemplary hospitality extended to the guests.

Apart from its Indian-ness, I think authorities have no right to do so if worshippers both men n women go nude in front of their goddess. What's wrong it that? If people are stupid enough to worship any dummy goddess whatever way they like, let them do that for god's sake. :(

Yes, if you tell me it's only Indian, I will hate it for intinctual reasons.
y'see, I just hate this silly Indian-ness that most Indians try to portray. :D

This event scavenged by you has got nothing to do with the cruelty to women. As you have yourself stated, the women come on their own. There are many ways of penances that defy logic. Such isolated events can not be totally prevented though the government is fully committed to curb this.

Have you not seen the shia custom of self inflicting injuries on ramzan day? In India the Government does not try to prevent this lest this should hurt their religious feelings.

Maj,

What can I say; I've already begun to make the ChowQ server nervous?

I wish your countrymen/women luck in their worshipful endeavours.

Regards.

Tahir mian,

Interestingly many men come down to this place and do some nude worshipping themselves just so that they can ogle at the ladies.

Maj,

I don't condone worshipping in the nude! This is where the words of mortals and the Words of the Immortal meet head-on. The right path is clear indeed.

The equally corrupt pundits have left nothing sacred.

Tahir mian,

I agree with you. If women want to worship in the nude of their own volition, they should not be stopped.

Regards
