Mushy`s spawn is trying to disown mushy?

Musharraf `wept` when East Pak fell

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said he `literally wept` when he heard the `disgusting` news of surrender of Pakistani troops during the Bangladesh war with India.

Appearing on PTV`s programme `First Family,` the General described the 1965 and 1971 wars with India as `important` events in his life. During the 1965 war, Musharraf, who was then a second lieutenant in the Army, said he was saved from a lot of perilous situations.

In 1971 war he was serving as a commando but not in East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. Musharraf said he was `emotionally hurt` and `literally wept` when he heard of surrender of Pakistani troops in the then East Pakistan.

Over 90,000 Pakistani troops led by Gen Niazi surrendered to Indian Army in Dhaka. The troops were later released following the Shimla Agreement between Indira Gandhi and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

In reply to a question, he said Pakistan Army is fully with him because he has braved off difficulties and dangers with him. `Each and every personnel is with me because I have not been I have not been a desk-type commander -- I have been living through dangers and hardships with them. They are with me not because of my rank but because they love me and that is leadership.`

First Lady Sehba Musharraf, the President`s son Bilal and his daughter Ayela Raza candidly shared their experiences, thoughts and hopes for the country`s future in the programme.

Musharraf said his keen desire was to be remembered in the history of the country as saviour of the nation from the brink of collapse.

`My greatest achievement is economic revival of Pakistan -- the possibility of pulling the country out of deep economic morass looked remote in 1999 it looked almost improbable in the face of an inextricable circle of debt-servicing but we managed it,` he said.

`Not only I saved the country from sinking but I would like to be remembered for taking it forward and putting it on a course to move forward as a dynamic, progressive and enlightened society -- that is what I`ve achieved for Pakistan,` he said in the programme, adding `I must be remembered for protecting the country from economic bankruptcy.`

While he admired Pakistan founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah, as an army officer, his favourites have always been Roman and German generals. He is not generally impressed by a singular entity, but greatly admires Turkish founding father Kamal Atatturk, whom he considers as the saviour of Turkish nation.

The fact that Kamal Atatturk battled the European allies with a mere, 275,000 Turkish soldiers, majority of whom perished, managing to have saved the nation, he said.

Commenting on his family background, he said he including his family belonged to the middle class and that he was representative of the middle class. Believing in destiny, he said it was with divine held he rose to become the President from the ranks of a `mere brigadier` in 1990.

He said he loved his daughter and son and described humility and honesty as values of their life. `They don`t tell any body that their father is President of Pakistan,` he said.

Re: # 135

Don`t be ridiculous and obsess about this Kashmiri that Kashmiri. Have you BEEN to `Azad Kashmir.` I have...Indian Kashmir is no Switzerland(besides the scenery), but it is one-hundred times better than ours. The news media tried to be `unbiased` in its earthquake coverage saying that on `both` sides the relief effort was poor. This is nothing but pathetic patronizing on the part of Western media. India`s response was quick, efficient and compassionate. Much better than the US response to its own hurricane Katrina. In addition India denied any foriegn aid as well. The reason so few Indians died is not only because the earthquake was less here, but because the Army saved thousands of people.

In `our` Azad Kashmir there is no freedom, candidates are forced to sign a document regarding accession to Pakistan. There was a poll in 2002 with around 60% supporting India, 33% not sure and only 6% Pakistan. We have to wake up to reality and stop making a mess of everything.

Wow, these comments really have nothing to do with the article. Though I am Pakistani in origin I must side with the Indians here, both in regard to the comments and the article. It almost seems like Pakistanis automatically deny anything good about India. This is a stupid mistake, like calling your own brother `dumb` ....it brings us down as well.

Back to the article:
In principle I agree the whole world should be nuclear free. However the world is bigger than South Asia. While Pakistan may not have other military rivals, India most certainly does. There is no way the US should allow China to access advanced technology and fissionable material while India is forced to sit idly by. Ultimately I do not believe Pakistan and India will have a nuclear exchange, as long as Mussharaf is in charge. Though he has been a rascal in the past, I think he now clamours for the `love` of the western world.

The thing about the India-Pakistan peace is that once it is achieved it will really be an all-out peace, eventually perhaps even an alliance or federation of sorts. We Pakistanis denigrate India but ultimately there is NO one else on earth that truly would have our back. We are not Israel that has a big brother US. If we can get over the ludicrous levels of hate between us, there is a huge potential for cooperation that is not possible with any other nation simply because of cultural and geographical ties. We say Islam Islam Islam, but look how ALL South Asians are treated in the Middle East. Right now we have no leverage against the Arab governments, because we are essentially leveraging against ourselves. Imagine, if we were on the same side, we would control the rest of the Muslim world. We would have 3/4 largest Muslim populations(with Bangladesh). And we would be the only muslim population with nuclear weapons. We could really take over the Middle East economically with our vast South Asian populations in the UAE and Saudi, and gain leverage on oil deals over the Chinese. We could gaurantee our citizens rights in the oppressive Arab regimes. Our friendship would be leverage against persecution of minorities on both sides, and against destruction of common cultural artifacts. For the Islamic faithful, we could demand the independence of Mecca and Medina from the Saudis and elimate the ridicoulous quotas that favor Arabs. Since we would have US AND Russian backing over the Chinese we would be extremely secure. We could play a huge role in the Middle East peace process as well, and form a fair counterbalance in negotiations.

I am not advocating an undoing of partition, but we must not be shortsighted. It is to the benefit of all our people and the world if we would work together.

If you mean some other countries, kindly name a few for my elightenment.

There is a saying in Telugu which translates into something like this, ``Why worry about the taste now when you`re anyway going to eat it``. Just wait and watch.

...there won`t be a shortage of countries willing to supply troops for this war effort...

You mean those countries who have pulled out from Iraq will now resend their troops to Iran?

If you mean some other countries, kindly name a few for my elightenment.

By whom? Robots? Do you mean US is going to land 160,000 troops in Iran as well? Now you`re getting really delusionary.

Unlike with the Iraq effort, Iran`s brazen attitude has ensured that this time there won`t be a shortage of countries willing to supply troops for this war effort. 160,000 troops? Nah, I think there will be more than that.

Kashmir was a still birth and will continue to irritate one way or another. It was annexed by India based on a fictitious document. Those graveyards in Kashmir belong to hundreds of thousands of Kashmiries and nobody else and sacrifices will not go waste.

A cognitive construct can never be destroyed even by the best SMART and nuclear weapons.

At the momment, India rides an international high, but Kashmiries will ultimately decide what they want.

Bharatbhai,

1. Pervez Hoodbhoy is akin to our DL Subrahmaniam or Arvind Gupta, who popularises science. His articles are of fine quality and therefore readable.

2. This Sanevoice is shut by the Pakvoices. This site is indeed of pak-people and for pak- people. Look at the PT (Pakistan Time) for all postings. Is it the Server is based in Pakistan? No objection as such but the bias is all over the site, the coverage, importance and the issues (all revolves around one religion) etc..

They keep posting how to establish an Islamic State but decline similar articles seeking a Hindu State. Dont get me wrong, I am agnostic but cant take this one-sided moralism.

That`s Chowk for us..

Making jokes is the easy part. However, to really grow you need help from Indians :)

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1478007.cms

... In a move which will fuel Pakistan’s ITeS growth, Indian BPO veterans are being wooed aggressively by two of the largest Pakistan-based companies — the Shaheen group and Crescent group — to enable them to set up call centres in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

... It is extremely difficult to get Indians to go to Pakistan, so the compensation package is extremely attractive. The middle management is being offered a salary of Rs 10 lakh per annum with an apartment and car thrown in as perks.
