``Consider that they can still opt out of pulling up diapers on the count of being unskilled, though the woman who does it had no such skill before either. Shouldn’t there be a cost to the added benefits? Shouldn`t men learn how to crush garlic and clip baby toenails, just as we have learned how to do groceries and pay bills?``
Very true. However I once saw this couple who came in with their daughter, 1-2 yrs old in a baby changing area located in a store, and the father was changing the diaper. Surprising of course since I have always seen the opposite even if those men are taught how to do it.

Ok, I agree with most of the issues being discussed in the article, its just that I feel a lot of it was written just for its shock & awe value.

I have so much respect for Pregnant women especially after my OB rotation at the hospital recently. Honestly, I have a new found respect for my own mother. God bless her heart.

I didnt know what was an Episiotomy. OUCH!!!
Guys look it up. It will give you so much respect for women.

I did a few post partum assessments during the OB rotation. Women go through so much during and after pregnancy. I had never realized that breast feeding is a major chore.

I was in the room while the midwife was teaching the new mother about breast feeding. There are so many complications to it. Its like, what position to hold the baby while breast feeding, how to put the nipple in the baby`s mouth and then waiting for the baby to latch on. Its crazy, not to mention engorged breasts, and how miserable a woman gets when she has engorged breasts and the baby refuses to feed. I hear its an extremely uncomfortable time.

As a husband and a father to two kids under 10 and a code coolie to boot - and one who never (shudder) wears sneakers with dress pants - I strongly suspect that the two old dinosours here are probably the most well trained hubbies of all. And probably get acidity from eating dessert anyway. All we need here now is Mr Ahmed who makes baigan bharta the new expression of love :-)
But much of what the author writes is true, the number of helpless, pampered desi males one gets to see is amazing. The main culprits here are those who have stayed at home all the time and apart from having learnt to wipe their bottoms (or use the lota) havn`t really mastered the art of independant living (no that does not involve boozy parties at friend`s place). Quite frankly in most cases I blame the mother who need to realise that poor darling iggi poo doesn`t really wear diapers any more and is capable of doing more with his hands than combing hair and spraying after shave. A good dose of boarding school normally solves this irksome issue though if that is not what you want then send him to work far away all alone. Not that it is always successful because with some people their inner slob always shines through. I remember being sent to our company`s guest house when I arrived in a city for a project. The well furnished house was in shambles. The sink overflowing with burnt dishes, the trail of ants showing me that garbage had not been thrown since the guys moved in and the bathroom was clogged with hair. Took me a whole day to clean the mess and fortunately the collegue who landed the next week shared my passion for cleanliness.
But if this is not fiction and Mr Shah does really exist then I think the writer needs to have a good long talk with the frog prince. Lets face it in today`s world the only use for a frog prince might turn out to be a french dish with a glass of wine (which is more preferable to a good whine).

Re: # 23

echo,

...... i hate to say this (once again) that the desi male, specially the shaggy bearded variety with the the unluandered look, is somehow afraid of women ........... maybe it is because of his anxiety about his manhood , or maybe it is simply because of the inherent misogyny in his ideology ....... in any case, i find this hostility towards women worrisome even though, logically speaking, with this kind of attitude these people will not be able to reproduce unless they go back to the days of acquiring the enemy`s women after killing of all their men ....

......... and your comment about hairressers is so talebanesqe ! ........ for god`s sake, don`t tell me that you prefer the mullah omar look .... if you do, i am afraid you will be going to bed without desert for a very long time ..............

p.s. fashion hint for the day: let the women in your life buy your clothes for you and wear them even if you think it is silly to wear three shirts witout tucking any of them inside your pants ............ and stop wearing sneakers with dress pants unless you want to mistaken for a code collie ........ and never, ever, roll up your pants and wash your feet in the sink - it is disgusting !

hamidm2:

I am quite conversant with whatever is ``in`` and that is why I used the term for whom I did.

That is also the reason I hate Starbucks besides their hopeless coffee & huge `cups` .
The hairdresser-just-laundered look is another indication that the suicide syndrome is alive (ha Ha) & well in its many manifestations...like aversion to marriage & children, drugs, STD`d, AiDs, amazonism, feminazism, khuusraa-ism & bodybagism.

ks,

``37. There is something very charming about a man who gives up sleep to read in the toilet. ``

....... and i thought i was the only one ! ........... it seems the market is big enough for me to file for a patent on a lazyboy toilet ...

echo,

and before you accuse our prophet (pbuh and his disoriented followers) , you might want to consider the definitionof metrosexuality :

metrosexual : an urban male of any sexual orientation who has a strong aesthetic sense and spends a great amount of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle ....

........ it kind of conjurs up an image of those guys on ``queer eye`` !!! ............ and no, i don`t carry a purse and will not eat tofu .......

Re: # 19

echo,

..... i keep on telling you john wayne and szarak khan are dead ........ even in primitive societies like pakistan men are putting on the apron and washing the dishes because that`s the way it is - and it has nothing to do with desert ........... finally, women are asking to be treated as people and not naukaranis, mais and concubines ........ there is more to life than cooking bhindi and changing diapers - trust me, i have done both, and the only thing worse i can think of is being a code coolie ..............

........... as the proud father of two lovely daughters i have advised them to stay away from two professions - housewife and code coolie ............ there is no honor or galmour in either ..........

p.s. with apologies to all housewives and indians ..........

hamidm2:

So you are cooking bhindi for ...pudding? Well other than the fact that I chuckled at the excellent choice of the dessert ( got it first time) but then if being Metrosexual is the price you have to pay then it is fine with me and you think it is a bargain then....

Unbeknownst to you that the damsels in distress have found a good solution which is paying them back in spades. It is the Koel (cuckoo) & the crow story. I`m sure you know it.

The poor Metrosexual man is allowed the pudding once in a while or if he behaves--but then the take-out pudding is still for Zarak Khan & John Wayne.

But then who would not like to be a ghar-damaad( ghar-juvaee) or ZUnn Muureed or Metrosexual for a rich widow, or princess, or er er... Doctor in the U.S . I try to be discreet & you know it.

I think our prophet (pbuh) was Metrosexual when he married Khadija and until her death. He was of course wise to marry someone 15 years older than himself. Following this suunnat appeals me a lot, but then when I heard about it the water was already over the bridge. [Oh the prices I`ve paid for my then hedonism & disdain for such knowledge]

Re: # 17

echo,

...... i hate to disappoint you but i just got done cooking up karahi chicken for dinner and while i was at it, i also cooked up bhindi the hard way - fried and then sauted with tomatoes and onions !........... and i did all this when i am supposed to be recovering from surgery - i cannot put on my pants like a man and it hurts to laugh at my beloved beer commercials, but here i am, slaving like a woman in the kitchen ..........why? because i am tired of eating chinese takeout and pizza six nights in a row ......... in between i also cooked up a powerpoint presentation on sourcing widgets to china, answered all my e-mails, attended a teleconference and made sure the sprinkler man fixed the leaks ....... oh, and i picked up my daughter from school, fed her a peanut butter sandwich and am now getting ready to to take her for her lacrosse game .......... and all this in my pajamas ........

......... also last evening i spent almost an hour trying to call in to vote for taylor hicks as the next american idol ......... and tonight, i will sit in front of the tv, drinking beer and eating chips with salsa, as i watch americans make the biggest decision of the year ............ john wayne and zarak khan are dead, and the sooner you get used to the idea of he metrosexual, the sooner you might get some ...... pudding

Yaar your indignation is well-founded but it was not just for the writer--but, and more importantly, for that certain class in Pakistan.

This is good stuff indeed, as far a writing is considered but it is word like ``metrosexual`` & other such acquired & fast-forward-to-mainstream stupidities where our people are just losing it that I start to hyperventilate.

This eerily silent & ghostly crouching of the man-eaters of Sunderbans is getting too close for comfort now.

Heck! I mean this is what I get after discovering/inventing electricity! To release them from doing laundry, lighting hearth/stove, air-conditioning [too long , provide own list], & once I relieve them from all that back-breaking work (10 children in tow) that here now they don`t want me to impregnate them; invade our offices & take away our jobs (even the typist fed his EXTENDED family).

Who made their lives bearable & now who is at the short end of the shrift? Talk about thanklessness & bayvafaaiaaN.

Hamidm2, be counted as a man in the tradition of Zarak Khan or John Wayne. I urge you to revert to the days when damsels were in distress & there was always work in abundance for us to save them.

Act before sperm-banks have intant-tellers & robots take over the erstwhile master bedroom.
