Equating Wahhabism with Jihadism (assuming that this term itself has even clearly been defined) is mistaken and ahistorical, as
1) the Jihadi phenomenon emerged at the end of the 20th century (led initially by the Saudis, it is true but also *actively* nurtured by the US, and long since quite independently of either the Saudis or the Wahhabi religious establishment there);
2) Wahhabism is doctrinally apolitical and quietist, and is very hostile to the notion of challenging the authority of the State;
3) Wahhabism has not been in any meaningful sense ``jihadi`` for 70-80s years, since King Ibn Saud disarmed the Ikhwan (the army of fundamentalist bedouins that he used to conquer Arabia) and made them (and their rallying call of jihad against infidels) subordinate to the State;
etc.

Wahhabism certain has contributed indirectly to the Jihadi phenomenon by setting the stage through its highly divisive and reactionary worldview, but it certainly hasn`t been the key element in the emergence of Jihadis. That`s a politically convenient fiction that hardliners in Washington peddle. Political circumstances, often ones that the West have promoted and/or participated in, have been far more decisive in this problem`s spread.

Take a look at Mahmood Mandani`s GOOD MUSLIM BAD MUSLIM for an antidote to this simplistic reading of Wahhabism as the root of all evil. This isn`t simply a question of theology. It`s far more complex than that.

*..consider this following statement from a Jew..* (name not disclosed)..

Look lady..enough of being Shahid Masood. That very chap too had notes on America now and then. Now he has Shut Up.

He issues what we want.

So you can be allowed to say whatevery you want but what we want as long as we want to.
You could be sponsored for this act.

We say green..our companies say Black (Black Gold).
Its always the other way round everytime. And stop voicing the concerns of the ignorant public. They pay and they vote. Let them do it their way. Our way..!!!!

First a little advice for the author: Time to refill your Prozac.

15 tourist visas? If you have a slightest clue about how easy it was to enter the US (ever heard of 11 million undocumented migrants???- I guess never). And how so easy it was to get IDs and SSNs, etc. pre 9/11? Visitors from Arab Gulf countries faced very little scrutiny (unlike Pakis) to get tourist Visas for the US. In fact, citizens of Saudi Arabia were about to be allowed to enter without a Visa (thanks to some Jokers that will never happen). Canada (I believe) still allows them to enter there without one, so go figure.

Some of us lost loved ones (I lost 13 colleagues) in these terrorist attacks, and it is disgusting to hear this garbage. Then again, if some can believe that a man took a pony to sky and back without needing a refill, all conspiracies will sound believable.

Saima,

I don`t think they`ll wake up till they`re rapped on the head just as in the 1973 oil embargo, which did stir them a bit. But then their pardoned turkeys in Kuwait and Nigeria let them off the hook. Since then, they`ve got smarter and inducted more pardoned turkeys like hamidm and tahmed32 etc. and some Indians into their system to keep making noises as to how much better and logical is their system and how wrong is everyone else in knocking them.

Well, time speaks for itself. None of the `developing` countries is developing, except the US satellites such as S.Korea and Taiwan. The only other example is Malaysia which took the US head-on in refusing IMF, placing capital controls, freezing portfolio investments for a whole year, and fixing exchange rates in response to the east asian crisis when everyone else who was affected liberalized and floated their currencies in order to ship more cheap stuff to the US. India? It is hardly success being code coolies and telephone operators in outsourced services. That just creates even more pardoned turkeys while 70 million people will continue to live in slums in Bombay alone, not even mentioning Calcutta and the rest.

Then there`s China which has prospered, but theirs is another ball game. They have actually made US dependant on them rather than the other way around. If China stops shipping to US now, which they can because it is still a communist country and their coastal regions can have a recession, so what? China won`t collapse, but the US consumer will see double digit inflation in manufactured goods.

So the US is not really all that BIG, even though it may perceive itself to be so. If US has to produce what it consumes, it cannot even survive. The entire reliance is on everyone else producing cheap goods for its households. But, there inevitably has an end to it.

Cheers!

Re: # 7

:). It is funny how being American means a BIG car, a BIG house, a BIG meal and a BIG ego, BIG carbon emissions (double the amount of Europe at only 70% of Europes population and then BIG hurricane, BIG flood, BIG cancer. (man did that sound like an evangelist, o no). Anyway, point is not to put the Americans down, point is will those guys wake up or not?

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/earlywarning/2006/05/911_truth_i_dont_think_so.html#21544

9/11 Truth.org made it to the Washington Post blogs, reflecting as the author says at the end `what is really interesting here is not some cover-up but the enormous disillusionment that exists not just with the war in Iraq but also the fight against terrorism`.

What? Give up my 8 cylinder Transam? You must be kidding Saima .... These sand niggers and camel jockeys can`t make me get into a green sub-compact the size of my bathtub. That`s for the chinks and the japs.

Dear writer,
Gasoline prices trading at $3/gallon have yet to dent demand in demand in the US, what is the reason for that? Maybe because in real terms (inflation adjusted) prices are still reasonable or global economy is big enough to consume $3/gallon petrol prices? Its my guess, its a little bit of both. I agree with your basic thesis demand will adjust sometime, but we have yet to find that price which is evidenced by continued economic strength in the US, Japan and globally speaking. Probably the worst hit countries will be the emerging or third world economies who are net importer of oil, take Pakistan for example. Trade deficit is widening beoyond expectations primarily becose of their fuel import bill which is having a snowball effect on their economy. Similar trends can be seen in other developing economies where inflation is moving out of control and growth is faltering. The, emerging or developed economies are a small component of global GDP.

US Govt published their energy policy document back in 2000, a very interesting reading which clearly lays out their needs and constraints. According to that official document, US Govt had serious concerns of supply and would have to ensure sustainable sources of energy.

Another interesting fact: Saudis entered into a agreement with US treasury post the 1973 oil embargo where Saudis would ensure supply of oil the US in exchange of Saudi maintaing their reserves in US$ and US govt not discling their assets. Saudi-Uncle sam nexus dates back to 1948 when Saud signed a treat of protection with then then US president in exchange of allowing US companies operate their oil fields. Saudi-US partnership or Saudi expediency has been there since the time they chose to oust the Ottoman rule from Hijaz.

{7. The end of Wahabism or at least the withdrawal of funding for Jihadi outfits if a strong enough chain reaction happens}

Withdrawl of funding to Jihadi outfits is already taking place and provided US Govt and its allies maintain their pressure. As for the end of wahabism, I dont see that happening very soon given they have accumulated huge finances, made friends in the right places and learnt the game which allows minorities rule majorities. If there is going to be an end to wahabism then that will onlyhappen when Muslims (moderates) confron this extremist Arabic beduin belief, if Muslims continue to coalesce with petrodeollars and remain subservient to the so-called custodians then wahabism is here to stay.

Wahabism has also started to mutate into a internationally acceptable religious doctrine, Mutaween are being roped in, rules are being altered, elections are being staged (vetted by the clerics) public relationsists are being hired. Cosmetic changes, scorpion retains its true colours yet manages to survive.

``Perhaps the two towers and the third building were wired to be exploded in such an eventuality rather than expose what was inside them. ``

Excellent point the truth needs to be known. Just like the 6 million Europeans of a certain religious persuasion who checked into German owned holiday camps between 1939 and 1945. Some even died with joy.

<<< Whereas what is more likely is that the US was convinced that Saddam had the resources, the army and the hatred to deny US the oil. >>>

Rather, he was a fly that caused minor irritation, had outlived his usefulness as a source for the extraction of profits by the barbarians, and fueling their war machine and so had to be swatted in a most profitable manner. He couldn`t have denied anything to the neo-colonials, maybe just altered the ratio of the spoils that went to individual members of their setup, even if he continued in his pre first gulf war bravado, with no sanctions. US access to oil in that region has never been threatened, these ``threats`` are an effective tool to manage and multiply profits, that`s all.

There will be no peace and development in that area of divided nation states, the colonials had a purpose when they put that setup in place and that purpose was not peace and development. When a so called sovereign nation can be brought to its knees over an aircraft (Lockerbie incident), you can note the worth of such ``sovereignity`` and the ability of those that rule over them to do any denying, regardless of the resources that they are allowed to get (out of the spoils). The entire world situation will have to change for there to be any peace and development in that region.

At first I thought this was a farce..a joke poking fun at the islamists like maulana urstruly and echoboom who think 9/11 was a conspiracy by the US government..

then I realized the writer is Saima Shah..

Their success (hundreds of sites keep popping up)

Fantastic..impeccable methodology..count the number of conspiracy websites and compare it with the number of websites of the 9/11 commission(1).

``Perhaps the reason that compelled Saudi Arabia is that fanatics would never question its leadership. ``

The reason is that they are the inheritors of Mohammad`s BS. Custodians of two Holy Mosques. Alpha Muslims. Their Islam is the only way that matters. Fanatic word wasnt even coined then in the 80s. They were doing the work of the prophet (proselytizing) in the cause of Allah.
