If I would have something like what this Jihadi(ally) said then I would have been banned for 2 days. He made fun of Sikhs and survived, and I was merely having a pleasant conversation with my long-distance cousin shandana......

chowkies: Please judge for yourself.

Shandana

Mubarak to you, hope it does well!

DW

Did it ever occur to you that since Sikhs came after Muslims that it is the Sikhs that have a Muslim gene pool instead of every Muslim with a name that is also used by Sikhs have a Sikh gene pool.

Kyu, bara baj gaye Sardar ji!

Jeonda reh!

Ms Minhas,
Congratulations. Somewhere down-there you have a genepool that is linked to Sikhs.
I always admired your writeups. Except the School-Admission wala.....

There is a famous academician called Minhas(A Sikh from Delhi. Your name reminds me him. He also encourages kids to become writer.

A good read as is the case with this author. Rejection is something which every one faces in one form or the other.....looking forward to buying a copy soon.

Re: # 5the thing is if are a good editor of a magazine, you know never to ask for a review copy. You are sent it even if you dont ask for it or want it.

the thing is if youare also a good editor you never ask for a copy of your friends book for reviewing. That is not a done thing in literary circles. Now who is his or her right mind will believe even a word you write in the review.

manto the lawyer/journalist has failed in training you on the nuances of journalism, editorship etc.

Sorry ma’m, I was not trying to deprecate your own individual accomplishments.

I am absolutely sure that those are many. For example, “putting up with Manto” would rate VERY high – by anyone’s standards!

[…. and can spare some pocket change myself without getting burnt at the stove, believe it or not.]

It is entirely possible – I am sure Manto needs SOMEBODY to support him! But I will really believe it when you ACTUALLY send your check to Congressman Edolphus Towns, instead of chickening out like the likes of Hamidm2!

Even better, dump the Congressman and send the check to me.

Shandana,

[you’re not really a writer till you’ve published a book]

Perhaps one is not really a writer until somebody wants to READ the stuff.

A book, like anything else to be sold, needs a target readership and something worthwhile for that readership. Try humor, you seem to have some of that in you – and try looking a little beyond your immediate family and community.

But dump Jinnah – he is a dead man! (You should consider hiring me as an agent – highly reasonable rates and guaranteed to raise your profile to the sky!)

Here is some advice regarding the cover – whatever you do, do not have this on your cover!

Unless you are writing horror!

So where IS the sea of Marmara?

[that fern had to burn]
Or so we learn! Thanks to that heartburn! As we yearn – rejected – on every turn!

[…they meant that other Shandana,]
What other Shandana?

Shandana, congratulations! I will definitely **buy** your novel and read it. If there`s anything to be said for my time spent at chowk, it`s that you`re one of my favourite writers.

I hope your novel continues in the strain of black humourish, slightly weird writing style that we`ve got used to. Too many authors while making the switch from time-pass writer to ``serious`` writer (whatever that means) make so much of a switch that you can`t recognise the new one. All the best, and let me know when it`s out.

Duh!

As a lawyer`s wife, money isn`t the problem, besides I am more than a lawyers wife (maybe in India a woman is only an individial as far as her husband`s identity goes, but FYI I`m in Pakistan) - and can spare some pocket change myself without getting burnt at the stove, believe it or not.

The thing is, if one were to be a careful reader of literature, you`d know that review copies are available months in advance, before the books hits the shelves...That`s why I want it.

Unlike in India, where 70 million need to be absorbed into the workforce, 260m still live on less than $1 a day and 70% still live in the countryside. (Read the Economist cover story), I`m actually part of the urban dwellings of Pakistan and can afford a copy of a novel.

Shandana when you can sell your Rejection Mantra then how long can you be constricted from writing out.

It is always a pleasure to read you on chowk

[Be sure to send me a review copy the moment it’s out. ]

Just like a lawyer`s wife! Why pay to buy one when it can be got free of cost!

Author, make sure you attach a hefty invoice for special handling services to HER copy!

Dear Shandana

Yes, we have all experienced rejection, the least being from the Editor(s) of Chowk.

I always enjoy reading your articles in Chowk.

Relax, your book WILL be published.

Inshallah

Shandana,

Congratulations! It’s about time a high achieving woman like you gets her first novel out. Thanks for writing this article. When you`re on Oprah, no one will remember the rejection. I`m sure it’s a great Pakistani novel.

Be sure to send me a review copy the moment it’s out.

Sincerely,

Aisha Sarwari
