One can interpret Quran as one likes as it is the only way to update it now when the messenger who delivered it only orally is dead. I however personally believe that the verse 9/34, which deals only with relative status of husband and wife in a family set-up, is as relevant today as it was 1500 years ago. Today the feminists talk only of woman`s rights, woman`s empowerment, development, etc., etc., but say nothing about her duties. Neither does Quran do so. It only tells that, like any social contractual organization, in case of family also the husband is the boss and the wife has to be obedient to him and answerable to him as she accepts in her marriage contract ``I give myself in exchange of so much `Mehr` (dower money)``. What better choice a woman has other than being a respectable wife. Even the homeless can take showers, stand in line at food banks and soup kitchens, and sleep in shelters on cold nights. Compared to the society as a whole, yes, the poor have it bad, but there is also so much more by way of social services and charity in this country.

The answer is, they are mere distraction and nothing else and the so called social workers are giving people similar c@ck and bull stories like hamidm when fixing the problems requires institutional restructuring. And let me tell you, when you take away the function of the family and blur the roles that exist therein, families breakup, the family institution is weakend and that is exactly what the corporate economy is doing and we see its effects.
