BJ,

You need to read the book “21st Century India: Population, Economy, Human Development and the Environment” by Tim Dyson, Robert Cassen & Leela Visaria.

The prediction of these demographers is that the north going to get worse and south is going to get better in terms of development. This mismatch would undo the growth of (overall) India thereby making India trailing behind China in development.

BIMARU states are not in the south. Southern states are slowly improving the HD Indices making them better developed.

It`s easy to blame politicians in the north (south are no different) but they are the products of our societies. We cant deny that. Civic sense is the most lacking quality in India.

Development is always mistaken for computers, flyovers and shopping malls with intl brands selling their wares. NOPE.

You can see that all the private investments are going to the south or western India compelling the people in the north to migrate to the west and southern India. The W. Bengal is an exception where it had picked up of late.

Keep coming, buddy.

Sir, perhaps the Hindi heartland has many shortcomings. I grant you that. But your outright condemnation is not warranted for the following simple reasons:

(1) Without their massive population, India would not be the world`s number one (largest) democracy. I think that all the southern states combined would not even match the Pakistanis and the Pakistanis would run rough-shod all over you.

(2) The number of wheat eaters would be eclipsed by those of sambar/rice/coconut eaters. It is well known that these items drastically damage health. Most Indians would die young.

(3) Because rice eaters have great difficulty performing physical labor, NOTHING would get done in the country. Everybody would be issuing administrative orders and nobody would be implementing them.

(4) The number of tea drinkers would be far outnumbered by coffee drinkers - raising the incidence of heart attacks through the roof.

Face it sir, you NEED those bhaiyyas!

[Dear Harimau, my favorite state of Tamil Nadu has the perfect excuse. It has lost the best of its brain power because of emigration to other parts of India and to other parts of the world.]

Yup, you got that right.

It took a T N Seshan to take on the corrupt Indian government and issue tough orders (as Chief Election Commissioner) against election malpractices. It took T S Krishnamurthy, again as CEC, to issue and enforce even tougher campaign rules (such as no campaign slogans will be allowed to deface walls).

While most TamBrahms did choose even Nagaland over the Tamil Nadu cadre, we have the recent incident of an IPS officer from UP (who chose the Tamil Nadu cadre) lying drunk on the streets of the city he is serving as Assistant Commissioer of Police.

India would have been far better off if we didn`t have UPwallahs such as Nehru, Indira Gandhi, their worthless spawn, Mayawati, etc., had never exited.

In fact, the only use I can think of for Allahabad is as a test site for nuclear weapons.

PS. By the way, that BJ in your name... is that a nickname or is it an abbreviation?

[BJ, Are you hibernating in Siberia?]

Dear VRV, I am ashamed to confess that I committed the unpardonable sin of visiting unplugged (UP) (using a different user ID) and because of the significantly degraded quality and much higher decibel level of interaction on that forum, I got hooked and now am trying to wean myself away. That, plus a trip to India has taken up too much time. (I was hoping that chowk staff will ban ``bj004`` quickly but they are moving at their usual speed - perhaps just to punish me.)

[How about Tamil Nadu? What excuse does it have?]
Dear Harimau, my favorite state of Tamil Nadu has the perfect excuse. It has lost the best of its brain power because of emigration to other parts of India and to other parts of the world. For a live sample, please look in the mirror.

At least Bihar has backwardness, lack of literacy, stranglehold of the land-owning class, etc., to offer as excuses for its lawlessness.

How about Tamil Nadu? What excuse does it have?

Read the local papers to find out how the OBCs are forcing the Dalits to eat human excrement for what are perceived as violations.

Yep, the same OBCs for whom there will soon be 27% reservations in India`s educational institutions and job market.

The only place where the OBCs must have a minimum of 27% reservations is in local jails and in the gallows.

I saw one joke in Times of India sometime back. i.e What Bihar is to India, India is to the World. LoL.

Micro-governance is lacking in India, not just Bihar. Bihar is a carricature of this malaise.

BJ, Are you hibernating in Siberia? The boards of this Cyberia are waiting for you.

Respect for law has never been widespread in most of India, including Bihar. This lack of respect gets reinforced when the ruling elite itself hobnobs with criminals. Hopefully, things are on the right track in Bihar and will improve over time.

Shantanu Dutta, , {``A bunch of people sitting on a string cot and calling themselves a caste panchayat or a biradiri panchayat can puff at their hookahs and pass sentence with accountability to none and it will be carried out.``}

Dutta Ji,
As painful as it was to read, I found your article to be well-intentioned and an eye opener for those of us who have had the belief that our beloved Bihar is the center of civilization, the zenith of culture, and an example to the rest of this violent, selfish, and cruel world. As a popularly-acclaimed Bihari on Chowk, I feel humbled yet resolved to restore Bihar to its rightful place on top of all other lands. If we do not rectify the course in Bihar, there is a real danger that the horrible panchayat system of misguided justice may make our wonderful abode into another Punjab. Then we will have evil panchayats ordering public rapes of sisters of males who are accused of romantic aspirations. Who knows, then even our docile PM or charming President may be forced to offer Canadian visas to Bihari females suffering from unwanted public displays of recreational sex. Pretty soon Toronto would become the second leading city for Biharis. Please save Bihar from encroachment of Punjabi culture.

Shri Syed Mirza Salim Ahmed ``Biharilal`` Chauhan
