Great article. I`d like to hear your thoughts on the Stockholm Syndrome. It`s a fascinating aspect of human psychology as well. I read the case of Carol Smith, who was locked up as a sex slave, sometimes confined to a box under the bed, for seven years, who said she grew to love her captor.

I think your analysis can also be applied to child killers and people who commit parricide. I`m thinking about the Menendez brothers case.

``Lay people might consider most modern serial killers and mass murderers “mad”, but in the view of mental health professionals only a small number show signs of schizophrenia; most of them in fact suffer from psychopathic personality disorder. They have no sense of remorse or guilt and are very self-centered and egotistical. Many of them are pathological liars. They are men with no conscience. ``

The author writes <<< The hallmark of modern serial killers and mass murderers is that they kill innocent strangers...From a psychological perspective, for serial killers and mass murders, a human being becomes an abstraction, a symbol, a metaphor >>>

State inspired ``mass murder`` by the US, which is a trend setter in that regard, fits the same profile though it is not as sensationalized as these ``petty`` mass murderers are and it is accompanied by a whole bag full of moral symbols and legitimations that justify it and desensitize the public to full acceptance of it. Reduce it to its nuts and bolts and cut through all the crap that accompanies it and it is mass murder of a higher scale.

While it is interesting, this article has some gaping holes. In the introductory para, it looks as if Sohail is making a case that Javed was in fact NOT a serial killer and that the hundred-odd murders were all a figment of his imagination. I also did not understand the significance of his looking ``very calm, peaceful and relaxed while the judge seemed very angry, resentful and revengeful.`` But towards the end, the same guy is used as an example of a typical serial killer. Can you please explain this?

Other than that, good article. Pop psychology- apart from TV law- has always been one of my favourite topics!

Serial Killer writer:

Now this news was printed & published right in your home town. In your book is it very important to have intervals between each killing to earn the distinction of being a ``serial-killer`` , do you consider a ``sequence`` killer as a ``serial-killer`` or you just adopt whatever term is defined by the educators and happily go about parroting it.

Can this person below be called a serial-killer although as per his suggestion there should not be a sequence or a series of killings. He despises intervals between killings.

He is not suggesting a 9/11 here; he wants the ``WORKS``.

He wants to eradicate the memory of Hiroshima & Nagasaki..by creating a new, more dazzling, more shocking more obliterating of species memory.

Do you ,personally, because you suffer more from pangs of humanity more than mere mortals here or Psycho association feel that such a person shouldbe straight-jacketed or at least incarcerated. As you are fully aware fundamentalist child-men muslims , some not even teens have been put in canadian dungeons without the benefit of even family visits for no fault or crime done by them.

Have you done anything lately to serve humanity to the point that your license, career, or earnings suffered? Do you feel you & your assoaciation should at least lodge a protest & get your/their views published in this very paper.

Have you wondered why this newsitem has not become BIG NEWS the world over. Have you wondered why? Do you think your society is rife with such serial-killer-wanna-bees that their is DEAD-silence over this matter.

We should nuke Iran

By MICHAEL COREN

It is surely obvious now to anybody with even a basic understanding of history, politics and the nature of fascism that something revolutionary has to be done within months -- if not weeks -- if we are to preserve world peace.

Put boldly and simply, we have to drop a nuclear bomb on Iran.

Not, of course, the unleashing of full-scale thermo-nuclear war on the Persian people, but a limited and tactical use of nuclear weapons to destroy Iran`s military facilities and its potential nuclear arsenal. It is, sadly, the only response that this repugnant and acutely dangerous political entity will understand.

The tragedy is that innocent people will die. But not many. Iran`s missiles and rockets of mass destruction are guarded and maintained by men with the highest of security clearance and thus supportive of the Tehran regime. They are dedicated to war and, thus, will die in war. ...............

Very true indeed. It seems they suffered emotional abuse at the hands of Jehadis who mass murdered their kith and kin at Shopping places in Delhi and in Commuter Trains in Mumbai.

Re: # 3 And coming to unconfirmed conclusions about one group like this proves beyond doubt that you stand in line with Javed Iqbal. Hence you need assistance.

The west has a long history of heinous crimes. And particularly after its secularization in the past few centuries, it has killed more people in the name of civilization than all the `barbarians` put together have killed in the name of barbarism. And the irony is that even after eradicating millions of human beings, the west is still the champion of peace and humanity!

Dear Dr. Khald Sohail:

You say you have written a book on on the topic of Serial Killers. Interest is one thing but actual business of treating is another story. No where have you written that you have done that. Why write here in Chowk where people exchange hot air. Why not write in professional journals of psychiatry say in USA, Canada, UK, and in other countries. Atleast others are prepared to use your insights.

Understanding of psychiatry is woefully poor in countries like Pakistan, India etc.

So why don`t you write in widely read papers there?. It would be nice even if a small percentage of readers were read. You are wasting your time to write in Chowk where most readers shown only concrete mindedness.

`` Steve Egger in his collection of essays, Serial Killer, states that “America produces proportionately more of these killers than any other nation on earth.”

No wonder Serial Mass Murder has been the American national policy since WWI. I think this viciuosness and babarity became a national psyche since the time early European immigrants started wiping off indigineous population. The reason that this psyche has prevailed to this day is because of vast geographical expanse of the land. In early days people had less chance of socializing and hence they did not get chance for the necessary catharsis required after a crime.

Dear Writer,
Excellent article, many thanks

As per the artcile: ``Hatred towards women seems a common theme with many serial killers`` Does this mean that all religions which are misogynistic are incubators of serial killers?
