I think we shud petition the President and Prime Minister of India and as many MPs as possible to let the centurion to live in the place of his birth.

As the author has rightly pointed out that a man as old as 107 cant do any harm to anybody.

If the last morsel of humanity is gone from us, then we are human beings at all.

Bhai Dotty, every good (or for that matter bad) thing has a start somewhere. And in humanitarian matters, why should we seek reciprocation?

#5 where will it end? That is the questin you must answer first. Would Pakistan be happy with it? Implications of the decision are important. Right of return could be set in stone then and it would be one sided?

I don`t think Pakistan will object if someone of no use to it voluntary renounces his citizenship. And `right of return` is too loaded a term here. This is a simple case of someone wanting to die in his homeland. No need to regularize it and open the floodgates to every prodigal son wanting to return home.

no I do not mean that. The issue is one of right of return to ones property as well.

Once a precedence is set, the law runs its natural course. And as things stand he could be breaking the law.

there are thousands of people from rajouri in mirpur and kotli, infact one of our neighbour was from kot bainka, i believe before the militancy some of them used to visit their relatives by crossing the loc.

I hope his wish is granted and India lets him stay in his pinD. I dont think this case will have any implications as this guy i stoo old and he is not claiming property or anything, just his right to live the last few years of his life there. It would be a different story if my dad went to India and refused to come back and asked for his land/house back. But this guys way too old for any punga like that.

Be nice to him Indians and help him!

Wake up from your dream world. No one is breaking down the door to come settle in India from Pakistan. And in fact the flow to date has been the other way.

#10 babaji is just being difficult. :-) But if someone wants to die in his place of birth - I think that shouldnt be a problem. The article does not say how babaji proposes to live in India - does he have relatives willing to take him in? or funds to live by himself?

..as dotty mentioned, states are afraid of setting a new precedence that can come back to haunt them later...therefore, the old man remains in the limbo he has been for so many years...sad but true.

I don`t think that this is abt the resumption of India-Pakistan detente. It`s abt the story of an old man who was born in his Kashmiri kingdom under British India but migrated to the El Dorado of Indian Muslims. However he wud like to die in his ancestral village now. There`s nothing wrong abt it Dotty. Laws we make are based on our robust common sense.

Though I live in a far-off country and have travelled to many countries, my village haunts me. Though my village had no tall buildings, no nice roads, nor romantic promenades, the smell of the village, old aquintances, landmarks of my village comes to mind all the time. Even Bahadur Shah Zafar longed for his Dehli. Though he was a Badshah, he too was a human being. In fact his mortal remains must be brought to Dehli and buried in Lal Qila. This has a lot of sentimental value and priceless symbolism (though I dont believe in spirts and all that stuff). Btw, India`s maintaining the mazar of the Badshah at Rangoon to date.

The old centurion needs his ancestral village at this time of his life. Since Kashmir is an unsettled issue, living on any side of LoC shudn`t be a problme to the old man.

Hope people like Mr. Ahmed wud be less combative.
