I think you deserve a dose of this medicine before anyone else. Respecting a culture and a religion is one of our virtues. The only thing is that there has to be a ``culture`` to be recognized as one, and there has to be a ``religion`` to be recognized as one.
As it happens, one of your `intellectual` colleagues, Mr. krishna_abcd, vehemently argues that Hinduism is NOT a religion.
Also, him and other Hindus contend that because the Hindu philosophies continue to change, therefore the culture also continues to change. Which effectively means, there`s no culture either, per se, as far as the Hinduism is concerned.
Now I didn`t say that...your own colleagues do.
Therefore, if you do not have a religion and do not have culture, then how can one be open to it?

Well you need to take into account the influence of the environment on the kids. If the kids see an open society with free mixing, dating etc while the parents try to force them towards conforming to an image based on India/Pakistan, you will get rebellion. They will hide behind their parent`s backs and indulge in all the things that the parents forbid them to do. I have seen so many cases where ultra-conservative parents end up with totally wild kids.
The reality is that you need to reach out to your kids and given them a balanced account of what is out there and how they should react to that. Appeal to their common sense without getting too preachy. That way they will understand and listen to you more.
If ntsyed tells his kids that all hindus, jews and christians are evil and they should wear the purdah and study the koran all day, how do you think his kids will turn out? They will probably put on an act in front of dad and do precisely all the things that he wants them to avoid.
